The stored coal is dropped down to the mills where it is ground fine and then mixed with air and taken to the boiler for firing. These bunkers generally store eight to sixteen hours of the day’s boiler coal requirement and hence are huge in size. Bunker failures have sometimes been reported. This paper studies the possible reason for one such bunker failure and also gives the rectification procedures suggested, including those to strengthen the existing bunkers of the plant that have not failed but were suspected to be in a critical condition. It covers the layout and geometry of bunkers, bunker and hopper supporting mechanisms, erection procedure, design aspects, reasons for failure, rectification and restoration schemes, etc.
