Department Description:
The EH&S Office is responsible for encouraging safe and healthful working conditions for all UC Davis
staff, faculty, visitors, and students. Within EH&S, the Health & Safety/Hazardous Materials unit
provides traditional and specialized services in; industrial hygiene, general and industrial safety, accident
prevention; and hazardous materials and hazard waste management.
Position Details
Job Summary:
Under direction of the Biosafety Officer, the High-Containment Laboratory Officer will provide extremely
specialized expertise for research conducted in high-containment laboratories. The incumbent will have
primary responsibility for planning and implementing efficient operations, laboratory security, uniform
safety and training programs, and state-of-the-art Select Agent programs for high-containment facilities.
The incumbent will provide expertise to faculty, laboratory staff, and students who work with pathogens
requiring high-containment and/or Select Agents in laboratory, and non-laboratory environments as
well as establish a "best in class" program for conducting research at the University of California, Davis
campus. Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:
Work flexible schedule. Work occasional weekends and holidays. Lift and move equipment weighing up
to 40 pounds; climb ladders reaching up to 10 feet or more in height; bend and stoop in confined
spaces. Must be able to wear respiratory protection and respond to emergency situations.
Work Environment:
Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions. Position may,
at times, require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials or infectious disease
agents are present. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance
with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Nonsmoking work environment.
Employee shall participate in required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs which
may include blood tests, immunizations, TB screening, bloodborne and aerosol transmissible pathogen
training, etc., provided to meet Federal, State, and University requirements. Required to wear protective
clothing and respirator in circumstances that require personal protection from infectious disease. Valid
CA driver's license required.
Continued employment contingent upon satisfactory completion of Select Agent background check,
including American citizenship or citizenship of non-sensitive country as defined by Select Agent
guidelines or any future regulations impacting Select Agent requirements.
Subject to passing the US Department of Justice's "Security Risk Assessment" for persons with access to
Select Agents and Toxins. This includes clearance by the FBI after the start of employment. An
incumbent who does not meet FBI requirements cannot fill this position and will be terminated.

This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon
successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity checks.
Participate in departmental daily and 24/7 "on-call" systems to provide technical information and
response to the campus.
Participate in the emergency response system, responding as requested to after-hour emergencies that
require joint cooperation between Fire, Police, Facilities Maintenance, and EH&S.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Virology, or related subject from
an accredited institution required
Previous experience in the high-containment facilities environment (BSL3) of a major research
university and/or comparable institution
Two years of laboratory experience working with infectious agents and recombinant DNA
Formal training and knowledge of BSL3 facility practices, protocols, compliance issues, etc.
• Expert level knowledge of Select Agent Regulations and best practices
• Previous experience establishing training programs/procedures
• In-depth knowledge of biological safety standards such as BMBL, Laboratory Safety Monograph,
the World Health Organization Biological Safety Manual, the Public Health Agency of Canada
standard for containment facilities, and the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant
or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules
• Ability to effectively operate microscopes, pipetting devices, computers, and autoclaves
sufficient to assess and identify various types of exposure and other biosafety issues
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and succinctly with administrative
investigators, other institutions, regulatory personnel, as well as a diverse cross-section of the
campus community including faculty, students, staff members, and the public
• Detailed skill/experience in modifying and preparing laboratory protocols consistent with
regulatory requirements
Expert working knowledge of procedures and maintenance of confidential files consistent with
the appropriate governing policy
Working knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
Ability to read blueprints and work with Design & Construction Management in the design of
efficient, secure, and safe high-containment facilities
Ability to perform comprehensive risk assessment to document program strengths and
recommend appropriate and timely course(s) of action for areas of improvement
Preferred Qualifications:
• Masters or doctoral degree in the biological sciences preferred
• Completion of National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program (NBBTP) preferred
• Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) and/or Certified Biosafety Professional (CBSP) preferred
