Yu-Gi-Oh! Deck Spotlight: Matt Laurents’s SJC San Fran Soul Control
Matt Laurents represented Team Comic Odyssey at San Francisco’s Shonen Jump
Championship, and took a respectable third place in the Top 8. His deck choice? A Soul
Control variant packed with tech, supported by a strong Pot of Avarice engine.
While Soul Control has been a longstanding powerhouse in the current format, Laurents’s
build is unique. The three copies of Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive and the pair
of Magical Merchant allowed him some interesting benefits most duelists don’t usually
have. Not only did he have a solid drawing engine due to his use of Tsukuyomi, but he was
able to slow the fast tempos of aggressive Warrior, Chaos, and Return from the Different
Dimension decks. In doing so, he was frequently able to buy himself time.
Once he got them and was able to pull off a Monarch summon with Brain Control or Soul
Exchange, he could protect his investment with the pair of My Body As A Shield. With
the amount of monster removal floating around in the current environment My Body was
an unexpected success.
Add Pot of Avarice to the mix and you’ve got a winning deck. Avarice can draw on the
fallen Dekoichis and Merchants, and the latter can bury more monsters in the process of
resolving its own effect. It wasn’t rare for Laurents to be leading a staggering opponent by
two or three cards worth of presence in a matter of turns, and his ability to capitalize on his
own momentum drove his climb through the Swiss rounds on Day 1. In the end, only the
use of a pair of Spirit Reaper AND a pair of Don Zaloog brought Laurents down, when he
faced the SJC’s eventual Champion, Fili Luna.
