After School Matters is a nonprofit organization that offers Chicago public high school teens high quality,
out-of-school-time opportunities to explore and develop their talents, while gaining critical skills for work,
college and beyond. Our hands-on, project-based arts, science, sports, technology and communications
programs are delivered at Chicago public high schools, community locations across the city and downtown
at Gallery 37 Center for the Arts.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Director of Finance is responsible for providing leadership and supervision to staff responsible for all
general accounting, payroll, budgeting and financial reporting functions of the Finance Department. This
position is a key member of the After School Matters’ leadership team and will work closely with management
staff from other departments to ensure financial processes and procedures meet the needs of the
organization as a whole.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
 Oversee daily operations of the finance department, including payroll for full time and part time staff.
 Train, supervise, and evaluate department staff.
 Manage month-end close process, which includes review of all journal entries and preparation of
account reconciliations.
 Ensure preparation of timely, accurate and meaningful monthly financial reports for other department
heads, Executive staff and Board of Directors while complying with funder requirements and requests
 Direct and coordinate the organization’s budget preparation and management functions.
 Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget.
 Oversee and monitor financial reporting process for government and private funding.
 Coordinate annual audit and preparation of annual financial statements, including footnote
disclosures as well as 990 tax return.
 Ensure company accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles.
 Recommend benchmarks for measuring the financial and operating performance of divisions and
departments.
 Establish, implement and monitor accountability to short- and long-range departmental goals,
objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
 Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial reporting requirements.
 Work closely with partner organizations to identify resources.
 Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein as may be assigned or
delegated.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 Knowledge of and extensive experience with general ledger software
 Significant leadership skills and proven ability to manage effectively in a high growth, demanding
environment.

 Excellent problem solving abilities.
 Ability to motivate staff to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously

Qualifications:
 10-12 years of experience in a senior-level accounting/finance position preferably with a non-profit
organization.
 BA/BS Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business preferred
 CPA certification, public accounting experience, or MBA preferred.
 5-7 years Supervisory experience
 Chicago residency required
