The Main Tour
Sunday, June 14 – ROME
On arrival at Rome Airport, after you have cleared customs and passport control, you will be met
by an InterTrav Representative who will direct you to your transportation for the transfer into the
city and to the hotel. There will be a hospitality desk at the hotel for informational purposes and
to help with any plans you would like to make for the remainder of the day and into the evening.
Monday, June 15 – ROME / Orvieto / CHIANCIANO TERME
This morning we leave Rome and journey to the spectacularly situated city of Orvieto. Perched
on a rocky precipice, Orvieto enjoys magnificent views out over verdant vineyards. The
centerpiece dominating the city skyline is the imposing 13th century Duomo, considered to be
Italy’s greatest Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. Orvieto also has an extraordinary labyrinth of
caves, wine cellars, aqueducts and tunnels cut into the volcanic crag, and your tour includes a
visit to this elaborate network of underground curiosities. After our visit, we continue into the
Tuscan countryside for overnight at the lovely Hill Town of Chianciano Terme. Our group will
get together this evening for a Forever Italy Tour welcome dinner. (B,D)
Tuesday, June 16 – CHIANCIANO TERME (Siena & San Gimignano or Florence)
You have the choice today to visit Siena & San Gimignano or Florence. The stunning city of
Siena is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval cities. We’ll enjoy a guided tour taking in the
fan-shaped square, the Piazza del Campo and its towering Campanile, the Torre del Mangia.
Passing through Tuscany’s lush countryside, we’ll visit the beautiful medieval hilltop town of
San Gimignano, remaining almost unchanged over the centuries and famed for its distinctive
skyline boasting 14 imposing towers dating to the 13th century. For travelers who prefer, your
excursion will take you to the renaissance city of Florence, considered by some to be an outdoor
museum. Highlights of your walking tour include the famous Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio,
spanning the waters of the River Arno, and the main square of Piazza della Signoria. Both tours
return to Chianciano Terme for our evening wine tasting and Tuscan style dinner. (B,D)
Wednesday, June 17 – CHIANCIANO TERME / Florence / HILL TOWNS
This morning we drive into Florence for a Memorial Service at the American Cemetery and
Memorial, located in Tavarnuzze, 8 miles south of Florence in a beautiful Tuscan setting of
rolling hills. Maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission, the cemetery was
established for members of the Armed Forces killed in the northern Italy campaign. Among the
4,402 American soldiers buried here, 326 of them are of the 10th Mountain Division. After the
service, we’ll have lunch, and then we leave Florence driving to the Hill Towns. (B,L,S)
Thursday, June 18 – Monday, June 22 – HILL TOWNS
These days are spent in the Hill Towns for the 10th Mountain program. Celebrations and town
festivals over the five days will take place atop Mt. Belvedere and at Querciola, Vidiciatico and
Lizzano-in-Belvedere, Gaggio Montano, Iola and Castel d’Aiano. During your stay you will
have the opportunity to participate in an authentic Italian cooking class. Space is limited and is
on an optional basis at additional cost, dependent upon the interest of our group. For travelers
who wish, we will schedule a return to Florence trip. (Breakfast each morning, and meals as
featured in the 10th Mountain program)
Tuesday, June 23 – HILL TOWNS / LAKE GARDA
We say “arrivederci” to the Hill Towns and drive on the Autostrada into the Po Valley, crossing
the Po River near the site where the first Fifth Army soldiers began to cross the river in their
pursuit of the retreating German army. Then we’ll head for Lake Garda and Riva Del Garda
where we will spend the next two nights. Depending on the interest of the travelers and the size
of our group, we will schedule a visit to the Memorial Museum in Bologna. The museum
depicts the events that took place during the successful attempt to break through the Gothic Line,
the German defensive system built to prevent the Allies from entering the Po Plain. Also
recreated is the scaling of Riva ridge and the conquering of Mt. Belvedere, and operation
essential to break through the Gothic Line. (B)
Wednesday, June 24 – LAKE GARDA
This morning we’ll drive to nearby Torbole for a Memorial Service, a site of the final battles in
this region. Wreaths will be placed at General Darby’s Monument and into Lake Garda in
memory of the many men lost during the conflict in the Italian Alps, the road tunnels and on the
lake. This evening, the group will have their farewell dinner at the Hotel du Lac et du Parc. (B,D)
Travelers taking the Extension Tour, please refer to Extension Tour itinerary. Travelers
returning to the USA, please see schedule below.
Thursday, June 25 – LAKE GARDA / STRESA
This morning we depart Lake Garda and travel to the Italian Lake District resort of Stresa, with
its lovely gardens and palm tree lined parks set on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Stresa has a
lovely shopping area for any last minute gift purchases. You will also have the opportunity to
take a short cruise to the lovely Borromean Islands. (B)
Friday, June 26 – STRESA/U.S.A.
