Its main goal is to bring the benefits of Little League to boys and girls in urban neighborhoods and to help community leaders demonstrate the positive influences of citizenship, friendship, teamwork, and physical well-being. The Little League Urban Initiative Jamboree events welcome regular-season Little League teams from urban communities and neighborhoods to participate in a weekend of fun games, instruction, and other special events, at no cost to their local league. At the end of the weekend, all of the Jamboree participants go home with memories that will last them a lifetime, with one team being crowned as the Jamboree champion. LITTLE LEAGUE® URBAN INITIATIVE EXPERIENCES Being involved in the Urban Initiative’s Southern California Jamboree has to be one of the highlights in my time of service to Little League Baseball and Softball. Seeing the looks on the players faces as they participated in the games or when I talked to them about being in National City (San Diego) or even away from home for the first time was simply priceless. During the last day, I asked a group of players what their favorite part of the Jamboree was…as they looked at each other they started laughing. Finally, one answered me and said, “We were talking about over there under the tree just a couple of minutes ago and to be honest we can’t pick just one thing. It has been an experience we will remember.” I shared that comment with at our district meeting and the comment one president made sums it up for us all. He said, “To have that said by those young men is why we do what we do.” That is my feeling exactly! At the closing of the So Cal Jamboree Ron Morrison, the mayor of National City and a Little League Alum said it best when he said, “Young people are our most precious resource and the Urban Initiative is a mighty tool in the arsenal for building strong and confident young people, based on discipline, teamwork and confidence.” Rolland Slade, District Administrator California Little League District 66 DEMIKO ERVIN, URBAN INITIATIVE DIRECTOR 570-326-1921 ext. 2245 | [email protected] 539 U.S. Highway 15 | P.O.
