A letter from our rambunctious, reveler extraordinaire Riley.
Dear Folks,
I am missing the homeland but am experiencing the world. As
Grandpa used to write in his letters from penitentiary, “Life is lived
out there.” Since my last letter some time ago I have been here and
there and everywhere – always a day ahead of the mob, I mean
In Europe, I joined up with a Greek Merchant Bank selling
government bonds – a great opportunity for a career – finally a
10-12:30 job. The slight dip in the economic fortunes of the land of
Plato, Socrates, and those guys from Blackberry necessitated my
departure to friendly shores before protesters burned down our bank.
A friend, who I have now blocked from my FACEBOOK convinced
me to invest in a shrimp boat running out of Louisiana. Wouldn’t
you know a little oil leak threw a wrench in the plans for shrimp
domination. I would have stayed longer in the Cajun Country but the
board of health disagreed with our advertising slogan “Our Shrimp
Come Pre-Oiled. Just Need Deep Frying”. The Fire Department was
not too pleased and was asking questions concerning the veracity
of our insurance claim for our burned out trawler. I hopped the first
Amtrak out of Baton Rouge, and headed for the new adventure - got
as far as Talahassee before the conductor noticed my lack of ticket.
As the oil had not yet drifted that far east I made a few shillings
selling t-shirts on the beach in Fort Lauderdale and caught up on
Coronation Street, borrowing a satellite signal and a beach
front condo from an absentee Canuck owner (Mum: Not a good
idea to leave your spare key under the door mat). The arrival of
the snowbirds meant it was time for me to flee, I mean move on. I
considered heading south to the Caribbean but my passage was
not possible – (I should have considered the trip while I still had a
boat.) I used the volunteer transport method, and thumbed my way
all the way north to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
I would have cleaned up in this great American city. I invested
the last of my cash in Super Bowl Champion shirts expecting
the Steelers to win the big game. Who knew – the Packers would
weld shut the Steel Curtain? Alas, my shirts went up in flames
for insurance claims as did my dreams. I boarded a Megabus for
one dollar and headed for the Big Apple. My vagabond shoes are
longing to stray. I want to wake up in a city that does not sleep. (the
subway and car noise are non-stop). As you always say Dad on the
way home from the pub, it takes character to get up after falling.
I’m a little blue, and missing the little town but I’ll make a brand
new start of it – in old New York. If I can make it there, I’ll make it
anywhere. A friend has offered me a job selling high end purses on
Canal Street – sounds a little questionable but I like the retail trade
and the fresh air.
I’m off for now. Wish everyone the best and hopefully I’ll make it
home for summer.
