It’s great to see more diversity in our takeout food choices with
new arrival sushi joining roast, pizzas, fish & chips and bakeries and
we hope that despite another delay Long Bay Restaurant will soon be
back on track with its rebuild approved which will expand our choices
for dining out.
The Torbay Plaza in a scaled down form is back on the Business
Association and Council’s agenda. The intended location is adjacent
to the pharmacy and it will include beautification along the road
frontage to County Rd. The safer and easier use of some of the private
parking area for certain events is also being
reviewed by the team. Design and costings
are being worked on by a small team and
when options are developed further local
consultation will be scheduled.
I’m looking forward to another busy
and interesting year this year.

Sir Peter Blake MERC
Cel e br ate s 25 Yea rs
On the 12th March 25 years ago 35 excited
students from Murrays Bay Intermediate school
made history. They were the first to experience the
just built Marine Education and Recreation Centre
at Long Bay.
A group of local yachtsmen and teachers (Don St.
Clair Brown, Don Burfoot, Laurie Baxter, Ian Sage, Dr.
Ross Garrett and John Orams,) responded to the vision of
fellow yachtsman, Dr. David Gray, that a Centre be built on
the present site which was designated “Conditional Use
Reserve:” land belonging to Takapuna City Council. In 1980
this site was littered with building debris, scraps of machinery
and foundations of early buildings.
After twelve years of planning and fund raising, MERC
was finally born. Now on its 25th birthday, not just 35 but up
to 150 students are enjoying marine related outdoor activities
each day. On that first day 20 years ago two staff managed to
cope, today there are up to 20 trained instructors on the job.
Although activities started on 12th March 1990, the
Official Opening was on 24th of March, 1990 at 3.00 pm
attended by the then mayor Anne Hartley and Governor
General Sir Paul Reeves.
Sir Peter Blake became so impressed with MERC that
he agreed to become co-patron with Don St
Clair Brown in 1998. He believed that the Centre
embraced the philosophy and commitment that
was much the same as his ethos for life. Lady
Pippa Blake graciously allowed us to honour him
by adopting his name as part of MERC after his
untimely death on 5th December 2001 at the
hands of Amazonian pirates.
Today in excess of 250,000 children have experienced
marine activities MERC.
MERC was the catalyst that initiated the fight for the Long
Bay-Okura Marine Reserve which was established in November
1995 and continues to teach environmental education programs
to its clients.
MERC’s silver celebration takes place on Saturday 21st of
March 2015. Join us for a day of displays and activities. See the
MERC website for further details (www.merc.org.nz). If you like to sail, check out the E.C.B.Rotary Regatta the day
before (Friday 20th March 2015 www.ecbrotary.co.nz) where
all the proceeds go to Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and
Recreation Centre.

opened the new Sushi Shop in
Torbay. Almost next to Barfoot

It has been interesting watching
the progress of the new shop as they
stripped everything out and repainted
right through , fitting it out with all
new equipment. As part of the team
they have experienced chef Jane ,

years at a very high level. Anne also
passed through the Sushi Academy in Seoul with an A Grade.
Peter and Anne have lived in New Zealand for 6 years now, living

Their delicious menu is made freshly each day from all top quality
ingredients and the hot menu includes Donburi with miso, Dumplings,
Bento Boxes and Noodles. These are supported with fresh crisp salads
and an incredible range of sushi, washed down with green tea.
There are special prices for party packs.
Several people have already told me they have tried the new

Solid SaleS
Based on January’s combination of solid sales numbers with continuing high prices,
it suggests market values are likely to continue to hold firm or edge up modestly during the
first half of this year. The average selling price across Auckland in January was $757,319.
The price segment where property is under the greatest pressure is in the $500,000 to $1,000,000
category – we certainly witness this in the Torbay area. The majority of buyers are looking in this
price category and there is a shortage of suitable properties available.

During the summer holidays, departing Year 13 student Gaby
Sansom was victorious at the National Surfing Championships held
at Piha earlier this January. Despite only being 18, Sansom competed
incredibly well and her consistency saw her win the Open Women’s
Competition. When spoken to about her achievements, Gaby noted “I
just want to add a big thanks to all the people who have supported
me with my surfing over the years, especially Long Bay College. It is
so cool to see Long Bay still supporting me even though I have now
left.” Congratulations on the fantastic achievement Gaby, and best of
luck for your future competitions!

A common sight on the rocks of Long Bay at
the mid- tide level are the white crusty, curly
clumps of the TUBEWORM looking dead and
uninteresting.
Now go and find a shallow rock pool
which has the same white crusty curly
tubeworms in it. In their watery element , the
worm opens a tiny trapdoor and pokes out
a delicate dark blue fan net for collecting
the microscopic particles of “wandering life
forms “ called plankton.
These worms are very much alive in the
pool. They respond to light changes (sudden
shadow) or touch by retracting their delicate
feeding fronds very rapidly. This worm is
again a modified polychaete worm with its
many bristle- legs changed to secure it inside
the calcified tube. These bristles near the
head of the worm have been changed into
food collecting fans.

Coastguard
The common bond that we share as Coastguard
North Shore Volunteers is undoubtedly that of saving
lives at sea and the special camaraderie that exists in
doing so.
We are housed in the Marine Centre in Browns
Bay on Auckland’s North Shore, where we have been
based since 1990, at the very heart of the Community
that we live in and hold dear. There is huge dedication
and commitment from the members of Coastguard
North Shore to ensure delivery of the very highest
level of search and rescue to Kiwis in need on the
Hauraki Gulf, where the conditions can change in a
minute.
We are 47 volunteers, including 8 different
nationalities, with diverse backgrounds such as
builders, naval officers, funeral directors, marketing
and sales managers, teachers, brewers, mechanics,
PhD students and more. Coastguard volunteers are
ordinary people doing extraordinary things in our
community.
Our vessel ‘North Shore Rescue’ is fully crewed
and on duty every weekend, Public Holiday and every
day during the busy summer holiday period, with our
volunteers on standby ready to drop everything to
head out to assist on the water 24/7. With a response
time from pager activation to launch averaging 15
minutes outside work hours, and 25 minutes during

work hours, Coastguard North Shore volunteers
receive tremendous support from family members,
employers and clients alike who they often leave at a
moments’ notice to potentially risk their own lives to
save the life of another. We pride ourselves in being
one of the most effective units in the country - highly
regarded by both the public and wider Coastguard
community.
Two recent incidents illustrate the commitment
of our Volunteers, and the demands on our rescue
vessel. Two fishermen were reporting missing in
the Kawau Island area. We were paged at just after
9.00am on a weekday morning - the rescue vessel
was crewed, launched and on the way to the search
area by 9:20am where we joined Coastguard’s search
aircraft, other Coastguard Rescue Vessels, the Police
and Navy in the extensive search for the missing men.
The vessel and crew did not return to Browns Bay
until 7pm that evening after completing over 9 hours
of continuous searching.
Another key incident of late saw North Shore
Rescue and her volunteer crew respond to a call to
assist a broken down vessel with three adults and
one child aboard, east of Tiri Tiri Martangi Island.
After pushing through a very heavy swell and high
winds we located the vessel with her occupants, seasick and very cold and wet. The vessel was secured,
and the occupants treated prior to being safely
delivered to Gulf Harbour after a long and physically
demanding tow.
These incidents are reflective of what our
volunteers do on a regular
basis in all types of conditions to keep New
Zealanders safe whilst out enjoying the water.
As President of Coastguard North Shore, I am
enormously proud of our history and the people that
give so willingly of themselves and their time for the
good of others on the Hauraki Gulf.
The current vessel is to be replaced at the start
of summer 2015 and our Unit members are busy
securing funding in order for this to become a reality,
in order that we may continue saving lives at sea for
many years to come.

optimal treatment is important.
Optimal Treatments:
It may surprise you that the optimal treatments for osteoarthritis
are not available on prescription. Most conventional medicines focus
on relieving pain, while the disease keeps getting worse. But there
are proven treatments.
Several nutrients have been proven to relieve pain AND reverse
the disease process by adding back the cartilage (the spongy
cushions) in your joints. These are nutrients that your body makes in
abundance when you are young, but makes less of as you get older.
The good news is that you can take supplemental doses of these key
nutrients. So you can stay mobile and pain-free.
If you have sore knees or hips, don’t keep masking the problem
with pain killers. Come in and ask our team about the optimal health
solution to support your joints

in March
I hope the hot dry
summer is not taking
too big a toll on your
flower and vegetable
gardens. The brief spell
of rain in early February
was welcome but not
sufficient to keep our
gardens producing without
additional water.
My husband is apprehensive about our water bill!
It was bizarre that after all this fine weather the morning of our
first gathering, an afternoon tea at my place, brought heavy showers!
However by 1.30 the rain eased and members were able to get outside
to view the garden. Mary provided a lovely spread and everyone
enjoyed the occasion. The decorated hat competition was won by Jo
Price and Pauline Occleston.
Our March meeting is our Annual General Meeting and we are
looking for one more member to fill a vacancy on our committee. This
is your chance to have a real input into the club’s activities!
Our next trip is on March 20th leaving Torbay shops at 9 a.m.
Please remember to bring a mug for your morning tea or coffee. We
are heading to Warkworth to a relatively new garden called “The
Paddocks”. This is a two acre garden specialising in “a variety of
plants including trees, and David Austen roses complemented by a
large collection of perennials.” It has been established by a husband
and wife team who met while gardening at Bev McConnell’s renowned
garden, ‘Ayrlies’. We then have time in Warkworth township where you
can buy your lunch or have one you have brought with you. This is
followed by a visit to the Warkworth museum, which houses a display
of implements and artefacts connected with the Gum Digging Days.
We will be back to Torbay by 4pm.
In the vegetable garden: Plant seeds or seedlings of
beetroot, brassicas, carrots, lettuce, spring onions, spinach, silver beet,
radishes. Side dress existing crops with blood and bone and compost.
In the flower garden: Plant any of the following
– antirrhinum, calendula, cineraria, iceland poppy, stock,
pansy, primrose, polyanthus, viola and wallflower. Liquid feed
chrysanthemums, delphiniums and gerberas. Plant most spring bulbs.
It is a good planting time for evergreen shrubs.
Happy gardening! Hilary Collins

Big Buddy mentoring
works on the simple
philosophy that boys need
good male role models
in their lives to become
good men.
For many reasons, lots of
boys in New Zealand don’t
have a father and while
mothers do a courageous
job raising boys alone, they
can’t model maleness. And
above all else, boys learn
through modelling!
It starts out with a boy
who has lost his father,
either through death or
estrangement. Mum (or
a caregiver) does her
best to raise her boy
but senses something is
missing – a good man
who can ‘do’ stuff with
her boy. There aren’t
any men in her family
to fulfil this role and she doesn’t
want to choose a partner based on this need, so she reaches
out to Big Buddy.
Since 1997, this secular social agency has carefully screened
hundreds of volunteer men in the Auckland and Wellington regions
and matched them with fatherless boys aged 7-14.
Big Buddy mentors spend at least 2-3 hours a week with their
Little Buddies, doing whatever they both enjoy – usually simple stuff
like walking on beaches, throwing a ball around, making things and
visiting places. The important thing is that the Big Buddy shows up
regularly in the boy’s life and takes a real interest in him.
The aim is for fatherless boys to know there is a man they can rely
on to show up, listen and have fun with. In the end, it’s a simple act of
human caring that makes a profound difference in a fatherless boy’s
life.
The statistics on positive mentoring are clear and compelling:
having a Big Buddy mentor increases a boy’s self-esteem; improves his

relationships, helps him do better in school, means he’ll be less likely
to get into trouble and improves his employment options.
Big Buddy CEO, Richard Aston says the need is always
for volunteer mentors and of course, funds. “If you’re a
good man with a big heart, please call us – the rewards of
being a Big Buddy are huge. In fact sometimes the mentors
reckon they have as much, if not more, fun than the boys!
I guess it’s about being able to try new things and just
experience the world from a young boy’s perspective. Gold”
Richard Aston says the programme has proved itself over
time.
“It’s a great feeling when we get young men that we met
when they were about seven years old, come to us wanting
to volunteer. We see a lot of second generations now putting
their hands up to be mentors, and that’s how we know there’s
value in what we’re doing.”

At Mobility Dogs Assistance Trust (Mobility
Dogs) our mission is “to enhance the lives of people
living with physical disabilities increasing independence, confidence, self-esteem and participation in
New Zealand communities”. Our Trust was founded
in 2003 and this has remained our primary objective since
establishment. We achieve this goal through the following
initiatives: undertaking the training of Mobility Assistance
Dogs; providing Mobility Assistance Dogs to physically disabled persons who are predominantly mobility chair users and
instructing those individuals in the use of a Mobility Dog; and
being advocates on behalf of physically disabled persons in
forums of all types.
Our everyday work is focussed on partnering highlyskilled Mobility Dogs with individuals living with long term
physical disabilities including cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, spinal injury, stroke, and Parkinson’s.
Mobility Dogs are trained in a range of special tasks such as:
fetching the phone; retrieving dropped items; opening doors;
pressing lift buttons; paying for purchases across a counter;
taking shoes and socks off; switching lights on and off; and
loading and unloading washing machines and driers. Our
skilled Canine Trainer oversees the initial training of our dogs
by our dedicated group of puppy raisers and walkers, and also
by the prisoners at Auckland Women’s and Spring Hill Men’s
Corrections Facilities who are now responsible for much of
the advanced training of our dogs.
As important as the practical benefits, a Mobility Assistance Dog also provides companionship, an increased feeling
of safety, and helps to break down social barriers. People
who live with disabilities often experience social isolation; the
general public can be shy of interacting with the individual in
public. The canine partnership has many positive outcomes
for the person living with a long-term physical disability,
enabling them to become more actively involved in society,
participate in community activities, arts and culture, sport and
recreation, and making it easier to access facilities, including
places of employment, education and training.
At present, we have 45 active partnerships working in
communities throughout New Zealand. Five of those partnerships are based on the North Shore and Whangaparaoa in
Auckland, with two more placements to follow in these areas
in the coming months. It is pleasing for us to see we have a
growing presence in this part of Auckland’s North Shore.

WORD QUIZ
Cook 1 finely chopped onion, 1 finely chopped garlic
clove, a little grated ginger, approx 1 tsp curry powder, ½
tsp cumin, ¼ tsp all spice, pinch cinnamon, pinch cumin
seeds and pepper in a frypan. When you can smell the
flavours developing, add a little vegetable stock and mix
in with cooled mashed potato, a handful of peas and 1
finely chopped spring onion.
Cut pastry square into quarters and then cut on the
angle again to form segments. You should have eight
segments per square. Put a little in each segment and
pinch sides to make a triangle parcel. Egg wash and bake
at 170c for approx 15 minutes until golden.

Torbay Theatre
iT n Hats,
Humble Boy and more
We have a busy year coming up, with the centenary
of the Gallipoli Landings providing the perfect opportunity
for a restaging of Lynne Davis’s Tin Hats and Gas Masks,
currently in rehearsal. This musical revue is inspired by the
two World Wars: songs woven together with a narrative
thread incorporating comedy and tragedy, and full-on
dance numbers. Lynne is once again directing the show.
Performance dates: 18 to 26 April 2015, including
Anzac Day.
The July school holidays will once again be enlivened
by a short play aimed at the younger children. Last year’s
Journey into Space was very popular, with most shows
sold out.
Our September show is Humble Boy, by Charlotte
Jones: a comedy with similarities to Hamlet – and to Alan
Ayckbourn. A Cambridge astrophysicist returns to the
family home in the English countryside, after the death of
his beekeeping father, to find his mother planning to marry
a neighbour. It explores a multitude of dysfunctional and
surprising relationships. Directed by Anne Rimmer.
And our year can no longer end without a large-scale
musical. Pirates of Penzance was not even over before
people were clamouring for another favourite Gilbert &
Sullivan. Keep a night free in the run-up to Christmas,
and in the meantime, for a bit of fun in between the main
productions, roughly every two months, we have a looselyput-together Club Night, where members treat each other
to a ragbag of skits, songs, solemnity and silliness.
