King of Jordan: We will not allow terrorists to
hijack our faith

King Abdullah II of Jordan called on Muslims to join the fight against the so-called
Islamic State during a speech at the European Parliament on 10 March. The
monarch said the terrorists’ acts ran counter to basic Islamic values such as mercy,
peace and tolerance. “These terrorists have made the world’s Muslims their greatest
target,” he said. “We will not allow them to hijack our faith.”
The King of Jordan also stressed a dialogue of respect as a way to create an inclusive
society: “Attacking and excluding others, insulting other peoples and their faith and
convictions this is no way forward. The future lies in unity and respect, not division and
In addition King Abdullah II called for the Palestinian conflict to be resolved by political
means and also drew attention to the fate of Syrian refugees of which 1.4 million have
been given shelter in his country. “This is more than the equivalent of France hosting the
entire population of Belgium,” he said. “My small country is now the world’s third-largest
refugee host and I thank all of you who are helping us to uphold this global responsibility.”
