Introduction
Making Origami creatures is a fun and easy way to get creative and de-stress. Origami is also a
very inexpensive way to entertain yourself and others. The only items you will need for this task,
are your imagination, as well as a good supply of paper. The purpose of this manual is to
familiarize yourself with some general creatures to make. This will ensure that you have a good
foundation with Origami, so that you may go on to create larger, and more complex designs.
Layout of the Manual
The sections of this manual will cover how to make a crane, a butterfly, and a goldfish. These
general instructions are perfect practice for a beginner, and will significantly increase your
Origami skills.
Caution
Paper used in the process can sometimes have sharp edges. Be wary of paper cuts as you
create your creations.

Chapter 2: Creating the Goldfish
1. Start with a square piece of paper, with about 6’ on each side. Place it on the surface in
front of you so that it looks like a diamond.
2. Fold and crease the top corner down to meet the bottom corner. You should now have a
triangle.
3. Fold and crease the left and right corners of the triangle down to the bottom corner. You
should have a diamond once more, this time with a line going from top to bottom.
20

4. Fold and crease each bottom flap so that they are flush against the top of the diamond, as
shown.
5. Fold and crease each flap so that they form a small triangle with one edge roughly
horizontal.
6. Take the top portion of the bottom flap; fold and crease it so that the corner is along the
vertical line. IMPORTANT: do not fold and crease all the way to where the flap meets
the horizontal fold.
Chapter 2: Creating the Goldfish
21
7. Take the portion of the flap that still remains below the horizontal fold; fold and crease it
so that it meets the horizontal fold, as pictured.
8. Fold the remaining bottom flap to meet the backside of your creation.
9. Rotate your creation so that you are looking directly at the bottom (it should look like a
mouth). Open the mouth and refold it so that the mouth is vertical instead of horizontal.
Rotate your creation so that it appears like the right-most picture.

10. Starting from the top corner, cut along the edge about 2/3 of the way to the right corner.
Repeat along the respective bottom edge. Note that you will have to do this on both sides
for the bottom edge.
11. Fold and crease the flap on each side so that it looks like a fish tail. If it looks like the
picture below, congratulations! You’ve just made an origami goldfish! Decorate however
you wish.
