BOOST YOUR

PROFESSIONAL
beggars are being
targeted by Fremantle
city council in a
new approach to
homelessness ahead of
Christmas.
The council has
previously criticised
Perth’s attempt to ban
begging in the capital’s
CBD, promising to not
do the same.
Mayor Brad Pettitt
says Fremantle wants
an outcome that works
for both local retailers
and people who are
genuinely in need.
“The city
acknowledges there is
an issue with begging
in Fremantle,” Dr Pettitt
says.
“The primary focus
is to try and help people
who are genuinely in
need of help.
“Of particular concern
is that some of these
people are professional
beggars who are not
homeless but are preying
on the generosity of
people in Fremantle.”
A homeless man
living on Fremantle’s
streets says rangers have
started to ask for basic
details including name,
age and address and
have limited begging
spots to William and
Adelaide Streets, away
from the mall.
He says the new
approach allows rangers
to identify people who

Thumbs up for
Coogee barrier
• Inventor Craig Moss (back) with volunteers and supporters of his shark barrier. Photos by Matthew Dwyer
by DARCY HARWOOD
PARENTS appear to have given
Coogee’s shark barrier the thumbs
up, rushing to enrol their kids in
swimming lessons at the beach.
VacSwim media man David
Mitchell says enrolments for January
are up by 66 on last year and he
expects the final rise to be more than
20 per cent.
Parents hadn’t been asked their
reasons so he wasn’t keen to link the
barrier’s presence to enrolments.
Funded for three summers by
Cockburn council, the barrier was
installed this week by inventor Craig
Moss from Eco Shark Barrier Australia.
He was helped by volunteers from
No Shark Cull, a lobby group that
has organised petitions and rallies
across the country to put an end to the

Barnett government’s program.
Coogee has never had a shark
attack recorded.
Mr Moss says the success of the
barrier last season was “amazing” and
notes it did not trap any marine life
or break during storms. Most shark
“nets” can have devastating impacts
on other marine animals.
Marine scientist Amanda
Elizabeth, who is helping film a
shark conservation documentary and
attended Tuesday’s launch of the
barrier, hopes it is the first of many.
“I hope to see it not only here but
also interstate and other areas such
as South Africa so people can feel
safe without being detrimental to the
marine environment,” she says.
Coogee local Beatriz Berbert says
the barrier gives her and her family
peace of mind in the water.
“It’s their environment,” she says of
sharks, while her two kids trotted up
the beach with their school. “We are
the ones who are invading their space
and the barrier recognises that.”
Mr Moss is talking with other
coastal councils.

LOGAN HOWLETT is

Mayors must reside in the

BEACONSFIELD residents
are demanding the WA
government reduce the
extraordinarily high level
of public housing in their
neighbourhood.
Ninety-one residents of the
troubled David Park area—
dubbed the Beacy Bronx—have
signed a petition seeking the
sell-off.
A massive 85 per cent of the
250-home precinct is public
housing, far above the 11 per cent
the WA housing department aims
for. Petitioners say they’ve put
up with gangs, drug violence,
break-ins and other anti-social
behaviour for too long.
Many are afraid to speak
publicly after a resident’s back
fence was firebombed.
Local Labor MP Simone
McGurk, who presented their
petition to parliament this week,
says frustrated locals are not
calling for forced evictions, but
change over time.
She says breaking up oldstyle “estates” has worked
well in places like Coolbellup,
Medina and Balcatta.
Ms McGurk says department
staff told her they were ready to
start implementing a sale policy
but no longer had the resources
to manage it.
But reducing public housing
isn’t seen as a panacea by
everyone. Karin MacArthur is
a member of the South West
Metropolitan Partnership
Forum, a group tasked with
• A Beacy resident rang
the Herald this week
fearing the Bronx was
back in business after
thieves targeted her
York Street home twice.
In the first break-in the
thieves took a laptop and
her purse, which was
emptied and dumped in
one of the estate’s cul de
sacs. Later a bike was
nicked from the front
verandah after she left
it unattended for a few
minutes. The resident
says January’s police
raids helped quieten the
area, but they haven’t

improving the area. She says
residents she speaks to pin the
problems onto a tiny minority of
troublemakers, not the concept
of public housing, and that
better management of tenancies
is worth pursuing.
“I’d be very reluctant to
suggest that the problems are
due to social housing,” Dr
MacArthur says. “There are a
few households that have been
identified as causing a lot of
the issues. One individual said
to me: I’ve been living here 30
years and there hasn’t been any
problems. What they’ve said is
now the tenants are not being
required to maintain the same
level of behaviour.”
Dr MacArthur says locals
told her at a recent forum they
believed the situation was
getting better: “A lot of residents
came up and said how much
quieter things have gotten.”
She says there’s still much
to be done but programs are
helping: Buster the fun bus is
back (with supervision this
time), a parenting program is
starting, and Fremantle council’s
spending $100,000 to redevelop
a local park. It’s bringing in kids
play guru Griffin Longley to
work out activities. “The next
[action] is going to be setting up
a local drug action network, and
then strengthening the residents’
association.”
She says locals don’t lodge
complaints about disruptive
behaviour because they’re scared
of repercussions, and a stronger
residents’ association will
encourage them to speak up.

• Melville council CEO Shayne Silcox is keen to see shift Melville Bowling Club into a nearby shared
facility. Wonder if it has anything to do with the estimated $30 million the council stands to make from a
land sale? File photo
Council’s $20m
drive for club
by LAURA BIRCH
MELVILLE city council
stands to reap a $20 million
windfall if it sells prime
property it owns in Alfred
Cove.
Trouble is, the land is
currently occupied by the
Melville Bowling Club and the
members aren’t keen on moving.
The club recently approached
the council asking for a loan so
it could install a synthetic green
and update its clubrooms next
to the Atwell Arts Centre on
Canning Highway.
The council stunned the
club by saying there’ll be no
cash unless it agrees to shift
to Tompkins Park, 300 metres
down the road.
The council promises to
sweeten the deal with swanky
new clubrooms on Tompkins
Park and installing a state-ofthe-art synthetic green.
Tompkins Park is managed
by Tompkins on Swan, an
association of rugby union,
touch rugby and cricket clubs,
who share facilities. Council
CEO Shayne Silcox says a
move fits in with a city-wide
plan to improve sports clubs’
sustainability and cater for their
growth by looking at “optimal
ground configurations and
facility improvements”.
Dr Silcox says Melville faces
“overuse of a number of its
sporting reserves” but that’s not
stopping him from wanting to
shoe-horn the club onto grounds
already shared between four
codes (soccer clubs also play
there).
The council is “working
cooperatively” with the club
says Dr Silcox. But president
Gary Mac isn’t sounding
as enthusiastic: he knows a
shakedown when he sees one
and warned his members the
suggestion to move was “no idle
threat”.
‘Shutting us down’
He wasn’t keen on talking
to the Herald but on the club’s
website he refers to the council’s
plan as “shutting us down and
transferring our club”.
Bowling coach Ken Boyer
is worried the club will lose
players. He says synthetic grass
might attract younger players
but older members prefer soft
grass for their dodgy knees and
hips.
Defying Mr Mac’s exhortation
not to speak to the press, a
member described the proposal
as unnecessary, and believes the
council simply wants to rake in
the cash. Any move will result
in the club’s groundskeepers
and bar staff being sacked and
having to apply to Tompkins on
Swan for their jobs.
“Why do I have to apply for
my job again, when I’ve done it
well for four years,” one staffer
complained to the Herald.
The staffer is doubtful the
new clubhouse will be a patch
on the current home, and says
replacing natural turf with
a synthetic surface is shortsighted.
Dr Silcox says the council
has no firm plans for the land
currently occupied by the
bowling club.
But it’s around a hectare of
riverfront land, and with blocks
going for around $1200 per
square metre, that means it’s
worth around $20m.
“The management model
of a future facility is yet to
be determined, and an initial
meeting is scheduled to take
place in December ... with all
user groups and stakeholders of
Tompkins Park,” he says.
“At the end of the day our
responsibility is to ratepayers
across the City of Melville, in
that we must maximise the
utilisation of community assets
at the lowest effective cost.”

ONLY in Perth can you leisurely
travel the entire public train
network in one day! I had the day
off on the Transperth travel-free
day held November 3 and was
curious to see the Perth metro
and surrounds from a different
viewpoint.
So yes, I travelled all six lines from
end to end in just over seven hours.
As opposed to driving, you can sit
back, relax, and absorb the scenery
and characters around you. And,
no, I did not bring a smart phone to
keep myself occupied in case you
were wondering! You should try it
sometime.
It is great to explore and see
what’s happening along Perth’s
rail network. The older Fremantle,
Armadale, Thornlie and Midland
lines are definitely the most enjoyable
in terms of scenery, with Gosnells
arguably the nicest station on the
network. It’s also interesting and
somewhat disconcerting to see our
native bushland having to make
way for urban sprawl along the
Mandurah and Joondalup lines,
with Butler being the “must see”
highlight. Some high-rise would
make this area so much more
interesting.
All this being said, I am a big fan
of public transport, so I can only
recommend taking the train now
and again. You have time to work,
or just relax and observe, and credit
to Transperth, all trains ran on time
causing no annoying delays. Don’t
you just love overtaking cars driving
and/or stuck on the freeway? I rest
my case.

There is no redress for Coolbellup
residents to the boundary changes.
It appears Melville does not want
Coolbellup, but it is necessary for
both Melville and the government
to get the Roe highway proposals
through. Roe extension is now Roe
7 and the port to airport link, if I
understood correctly.
The re-zoning of Coolbellup
has apparently been undertaken
without a traffic study. This is par
for course as Cockburn Central
is a classic example of planning
without a sensible traffic study. I am
a firm believer in workplace drug
testing and it appears this should
be mandatory in local government
for all employees at the start of each
shift.
There is no need to rezone all
of Coolbellup. The increases in
population can be achieved around
the shopping hub by adopting world
standards. We need to employ some
planners from overseas to teach us
how to do it right, first time, not
trying to fix the problems over the
next 10 years.
We were told that Roe extension
was going to be built under its new
title whether we liked it or not,
as Melville wanted the trucks off
Leach Highway and onto Stock
Road, to reduce the noise and traffic
in its locality and provide access
to Murdoch and Fiona Stanley
hospitals.
The proposals put to the meeting
are totally unacceptable in their
current form. We were also told most
people from other municipalities that
have been rolled into Fremantle are
also aghast at their predicament
The Mayor of Cockburn also
informed the meeting he was selling
his house of 30 years to move
to the new Kwinana/Cockburn
municipality.
It would appear Logan does not
want to stand for a seat on Melville
council either.
Meanwhile, when the CEO of
Melville council stated the state
government had instructed him to
create 11,000 new housing allotments,
and that was what he was going
to do, one of the ratepayers at the
meeting informed him he did not
work for the state government and
that he is employed by the ratepayers
of the City of Melville.
No comment was forthcoming.
All ratepayers’ monies spent by
the WA local government association
telling us what local government
does for us was trashed at that
meeting. We were told council will
do what it likes and if you do not
agree, too bad. Local government is
just another branch of bureaucracy.
Time to find a new model that
represents ratepayer interests.

Night train
curfew please
I AM a resident of a property in
Marine Terrace and have owned
the property for 11 years. I totally
agree the noise from the trains
has become much worse in recent
years (Herald, November 22, 2014).
I have even experienced some
vibrations through my home at
times. The screeching has become
a problem. I find it very distressing
to be woken up in the middle of the
night with this noise as well as some
of the drivers blowing their horns
very loudly.
At my age, I find it is difficult to
get back to sleep and sometimes only
just manage before the next train
comes along and does it all again!
I don’t understand why the trains
cannot run during the day only.
When I bought the property I was
fully aware it was across from a train
line and I accept this, but I did not
expect to have them running through
the night!
I would like to see a curfew
between 11pm and 6am for the health
and wellbeing of all residents.

South Freo High
A
RECENT grievance
motion raised by
Fremantle state Labor
MP Simone McGurk in
parliament once again raised
the issues of public schooling
in Fremantle.
The WA education minister is
yet to clarify the future of South
Fremantle and Hamilton Senior
High Schools, though many
believe the two will eventually
amalgamate.
Students, parents, staff and
many community members
continue to support South
Fremantle SHS and look forward
to a larger school in the future on
this site.
Our vision is for an excellent
and comprehensive public
school in the Fremantle region
which builds on the strengths of
South Fremantle and Hamilton
SHSs and which offers a 21st
century education for our young
people. We call it Fremantle
College.
A new, rebranded school can
be based on the South Fremantle
SHS site, taking advantage of
the high-quality facilities and
spacious site and reducing costs

RACHEL ROBERTSON and PETER NEWMAN say Fremantle
parents should enrol their kids at South Fremantle SHS to increase
the ATAR and vocational courses it can offer. Dr Robertson chairs the
school’s council and Prof Newman chairs its carbon-neutral committee.
to government. The extensive
local and other partnerships
already developed can be
retained. A Gifted and Talented
Academic Program should be
allocated to Fremantle to boost
the academic focus.
The school will become a
“Lighthouse School” for the
future, building on South
Fremantle’s carbon-neutral
status and developing
sustainable practices further.
We have plans for a geothermal
system and many other exciting
ventures.
More than 200 new students
are enrolled for 2015 at South
Fremantle, reflecting the school’s
success. The school has also
just been granted Independent
Public School status for 2015,
another recognition of the
service it provides students.
A small Fremantle-based
lobby group calling itself High
School Options for Fremantle
has criticised South Fremantle
SHS, saying it does not offer the
full range of ATAR courses. This
is true, as the current student
cohort in year 11 and 12 is not
sufficient to offer all ATAR
courses. In fact, no high school
has the full range of ATAR
courses and South Fremantle
does offer what is commonly
viewed as the traditional ATAR
range of subjects, either at the
school or via a partnership with
other local schools.
We can change the schooling
situation in Fremantle by
building a larger school on the
current South Fremantle site and
offering a Gifted and Talented
Academic Program. If local
primary school parents commit
to enrolling their children at
South Fremantle SHS, it would
create an increase in student
numbers and therefore increased
ATAR and vocational courses.
This is the best outcome for
current and future young people
in the greater Fremantle area.

THE mother of a young man who died when his
ventilator stopped during a blackout says health
bureaucrats have told her it’s too expensive to install
automatic backup generators for everyone who uses
similar machines.
Lesley Murphy’s son, Conor, a muscular dystrophy sufferer
and staffer for federal Labor MP Melissa Parke, died along with
his best mate Kyle Scolari in July when a massive storm cut
power to their Beaconsfield home as they slept.
Ms Murphy dismissed media reports there was no backup
power, but said the system relied on the pair’s carer switching it
over manually in the event of power being cut. He’d checked the
pair earlier in the night, but had slept through the blackout.
Ms Murphy emphasised the family didn’t blame the carer,
who’d been with Conor for seven years, saying to do so would
condemn every family member or carer to sleepless nights every
time there was a storm.
She’s irked however that when Conor was put on his first
respirator at 16 years of age, the family was told nothing about
providing battery backup for his ventilation system.
Conor had a built-in respirator on his wheelchair, but it had a
limited time frame of a few hours.
The family received a wake-up call about how inadequate
that was a few years later.
“You remember there was a huge storm a few years ago and
the power was out for a couple of nights?” she says.
“We ended up having to drive up to Rocky Bay and camp
there for a couple of nights because they had an emergency
power supply.”
Ms Murphy says the family researched backup supplies itself
and purchased a generator: some expert advice from the get go
would have helped.
At the time, automatic backups weren’t available but since
her son’s death she’s discovered medical supply companies such
as Resmed do offer them on some machines.
Ms Murphy is a life member of Muscular Dystrophy WA and
formerly sat on its board. She says since her son’s death, the
association has peppered its website with warnings about the
need for backup power.
She’s been approached by many parents whose backups were
less sophisticated than hers who are now updating their systems,
and says she’s heard that Conor’s death has sent shockwaves
through the global muscular dystrophy community.
The association says it’s investigating ventilators with built-in
backups.
Mr Murphy’s death is subject to a coroner’s inquest.

Let’s meat
BUTCHERY is a small world it seems.
“I remember him, he was at Robb’s Jetty—yeah I know your
dad.” In just a few moments Beaconsfield butcher Joe Princi’s
placed real estate agent Todd Grierson’s father, who’s long
retired from the industry.
The realo said his old man kept pestering him with stories
about the good old days before supermarkets started crowding
out the local butcher shops, so he decided to organise a shindig
to bring all the old boners back together again.
The Fremantle Butchers Convention is being held at 3pm
on Wednesday December 3 at the Swan Yacht Club in East
Fremantle.
Mr Grierson, who like a lot of his mates also spent a stint at
the Robb’s Jetty abattoir, says when he started there were three
butchers along South Terrace alone.

Review puts cafe
investment at risk
by STEVE GRANT

199 High Street,
Fremantle

KEL SMITH wants to invest $200,000
in his popular Carriage Cafe on the
Fremantle Esplanade but says the
council’s refusal to extend his lease
makes it unnecessarily risky.
He’s got another four years to go on
the current lease but is seeking 10 more to
make the investment worthwhile.
However, the council’s refusing to
extend the lease before the expected
completion early next year of a review of
the Esplanade’s masterplan.
Mr Smith says there’s no set date
for the review’s completion, nor its
consideration by the council, leaving him
and his expansion plans in limbo.
Given the review could recommend
the cafe be moved from its home under
century-old Norfolk Pines, as flagged in
the master plan, he’s worried about the
financial risk.
Determined
Mr Smith is convinced many on the
council, still smarting from a previous
lease stoush and his self-admitted
take-no-prisoners personality, remain
determined to push him off the park
completely.
At this week’s meeting he reminded
councillors what happened in 2009 when
the council tried to boot him: he took in
a 13,000-signature petition he’d gathered
from supporters, including the name of
former WA premier Peter Dowding.
Mr Smith’s previous ear-bashing of
councillors over his concerns they were
pushing him out had earned him a
stern rebuke from chair Robert Fittock,
• Kel Smith reminded councillors of the popularity of his Carriage Cafe by taking along his 2009 mega-petition. Photo by Steve Grant
who said he was tiring of “conspiracy
theories”.
At least one of Mr Smith’s tinfoil-hat
theories appears to have come to fruition,
though.
He’s long argued the council would
prefer pop-up food vans on the reserve
and, while a recent trial ensured they
had to keep their distance from existing
businesses, the Herald has discovered
the council has approved two that will
operate metres from the Carriage.
Mr Smith is crying foul, saying they’ll
compete with him for business without
wearing the significant overheads
he faces, including rent, staff and
maintenance.
He rejects notions that creating a
vibrant food hub will draw more people
to the Esplanade.
“Pop-ups do not draw in visitors to
Fremantle,” he said, adamantly.
“They do the opposite and only arrive
when the weather is fine and pop up at
the busy spots.”
He says the former owner of nowclosed Mistral Cafe had blamed vans
in Kings Square for sucking trade from
his long-standing business, making it
unviable.

A YOUNG Cockburn woman has
been arrested after a peaceful sit-in at
the office of Senator Michaelia Cash.
Natha Middlemas, a member of the
Love Makes A Way Christian movement
which protests the imprisonment of
children in immigration detention centres,
was one of 111 detained on Monday
across Australia following prayer sit-ins.
Ms Middlemas says she’s involved
because she’s deeply concerned about
the dire conditions faced by children
in detention: “There are 726 children
in detention—how much more serious
does this have to be for Australians to
take action?” she asks. She’d worked
with the First Home Project, helping
refugees settle in the Perth region. Her
view is corroborated by the Australian
Human Rights Commission, Amnesty
International and the United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees. All
have released reports stating that children
in detention are denied basic health
and education opportunities, and that
incarceration leads to long-term negative
effects on physical, mental and emotional
health.

Boundary ‘shambles’
by STEPHEN POLLOCK
AROUND 100 concerned southern
suburbs residents attended a meeting
on local government mergers at
the Coolbellup community school
Monday.
Under Barnett government plans,
Samson (Fremantle) and Coolbellup
(Cockburn) are to be annexed by Melville.
Willagee Labor MP Peter Tinley
organised the meeting after being
inundated with calls from residents
worried about the financial and social
ramifications of moving to Melville.
“Residents are worried about rates
rises, keeping tip passes and making sure
their suburb is not forgotten,” he says.
“We are meant to live in a
democracy—locals should be given
a say in whether their suburb is to be
transferred to Melville. The whole process
has been a shambles, and WA Labor and I
will continue to fight it in parliament.”
As the WA government has classified
the shift as a boundary alignment and
not a merger, Samson and Coolbellup
residents will not have the chance to
trigger a referendum on the move.

New skin clinic provides comprehensive care
Most of us know that protecting our skin
from the sun is the most important step in
preventing skin cancer, yet despite this, 2 out
of 3 West Australians will develop some sort
of skin cancer during their lifetime. Most skin
cancers are curable if caught early and it is
important to regularly check your skin.
The Skin Clinic Fremantle is a new, privately
owned boutique medical practice offering
comprehensive primary-care skin cancer
assessment and treatment. Services include
screening, surgical and non-surgical
treatments. A Medicare rebate is available for
skin cancer services and pensioners are bulk
billed.
The Skin Clinic is currently WA’s
only miraDry® provider, a TGA-approved
procedure that brings a lasting solution to
sufferers of hyperhidrosis (excessive armpit
sweating). For many people, excessive
underarm sweating is a daily struggle that
can interfere with nearly every aspect
of life. The miraDry® procedure is quick,
non-invasive and performed under local
anaesthetic to eliminate the sweat glands,
safely and permanently.
The clinic also offers an extensive choice of
cosmetic medical treatments such as wrinkle
relaxers, dermal fillers, sclerotherapy, cosmetic
mole removal, IPL for photo rejuvenation and hair
removal, medical grade peels, dermal needling and

treatments is to provide a refreshed,

reflect the way you feel inside. I believe
there is no “one size fits all” with cosmetic
medicine and therefore offer a bespoke

times, costs, aims and results will therefore
vary from client to client.” explained Sarah.

THE Green Mo just got a lot
greener and a lot smaller.
The distinctive smoothiejuice-coffee-breakfast van that
pops up around Fremantle and
festivals now has a compact
partner, Mini Mo — a 980cc
Suzuki van whose crammed
insides are powered by gas or
solar panels.
The 2m x 1.4m “kiosk” is the
product of Green Mo owner Dirk
Schoendube’s desire to minimise
his carbon foootprint which
he achieves by using a 4-litre
gas bottle to power the coffee
machine and roof-top solar
panels to keep the grinder, juicer
and blender humming.
“I’m really happy with this,”
Dirk explains after spending
three months building Mini Mo
in his driveway.
“It is very efficient—five days
of making coffee on four litres
(of gas) and I still have some left.
“It can do 360 shots an hour
if I’m quick enough. It’s really
powerful and amazing. The solar
panels charge batteries which
power the grinder, juicer and
fridges.”
All of which further
Dirk’s desire to be both
environmentally sensitive and
ethically productive.
“The coffee is fair trade and
roasted in Bibra Lake,” he states
proudly.
“I don’t use sugar or dairy in
my smoothies, I make my own
granola with sprouted seeds and
nuts—in short I want this to be
special, with excellent coffee and
service.”
Dirk says he searched high
and low for a plumber who
could set up the coffee machine,
having been made aware of the
possibility by similar set-ups in
the eastern states.
“I rang 10 gas plumbers and
they all said they can’t do this
— I got very frustrated because
in Sydney they already do
this but it has never happened
here. I don’t know if this is the
first of its kind in WA but I’m
pretty sure most are powered by
generator.”
Mini Mo is stationed at South
Fremantle’s dog beach from
Friday to Sunday.

The race was first held in
1922 and won by 14-year-old

At some stage it stopped but
was rebooted in 2003 by the

Underdog at her swim thru,
Maisie beat older sister Eileen,

Maisie remains the only
female to ever win the ocean

high this year on Jaime Bowler
who’s tipped as one to watch.

Bowler was the fastest

T
he East Fremantle Festival will be held on Sunday December 7 from
1:00pm until 7:00pm. This year’s festival will have an Italian flavour, to
celebrate the heritage of the Town of East Fremantle.
Sewell Street and Duke Street Stages will feature local Fremantle acts, along
with other talent from around Perth. Buskers and roving entertainers will also
entertain the festival crowds.
Delicious gourmet food from around the globe will be on offer on George
Street. In keeping with the Italian theme, Theo Kalogeracos, known in the
culinary world as a Master Pizza Chef, will give live demonstrations.
Kids will be spoilt with free activities in Glasson Park, including pasta jewellery
making, free face painting and giant games. Incredible Creatures and Ranger’s
Reds Wildlife Display will also be there.
“shop to your heart’s content and
buy a unique gift or two, just in
time for Christmas”
Call out for Buskers
Do you love to perform? You’ve still got
time (just!) to strut your stuff at The East
Fremantle Festival.
The organisers are putting a ‘call out’ to
talented locals to register to busk at the
festival next weekend.
A variety of entertainers are performing
at the festival but there’s room for a
couple more.
If you’re an entertainer and fancy having
a pitch at the festival, please contact the
Festival Coordinator on 0415 649 265.
The George Street Artisan Market, with locally handmade products, will be at
the festival again this year. Shop to your heart’s content and buy a unique gift
or two, just in time for Christmas.
George Street Businesses will be opening their doors and will also ‘spill out’
onto the street, showcasing their wares and other goodies.

Young George is the new kid on the block
in George St, East Fremantle. An exciting
new concept by the team behind The Wine
Store + Kitchen, Young George is an eclectic
offering of daytime deli, which morphs into
a chilled small bar and late night kitchen.
It’s cool, with a laid back & unpretentious
atmosphere. Think Greenwich Village deli
meets Deus ex Machina cafe and you’re on
the right track.
“Eating out is trending away from special
occasion fine dining into a more relaxed
and every day style. Our food follows a fine
dining ethos in terms of quality, but presents
in a far more approachable way. The end
result is people frequenting the venue more
often and having more fun,” said owner Rob
Bates-Smith.
Young George’s wood fired pizzas are
something else. “A unique blend of various
Italian flours and our resident ‘mother yeast’
are combined to create chewy, fluffy longferment dough. We don’t use semolina as a
filler as it tends to make the crust grainy. San
Marzano tomatoes are the secret to our sugo
for their incredible depth of flavour and the
rest is all about the best produce we can find,”
explained Rob.
But it’s not all pizza. Share plates further
showcase how serious the food focus is at
Young George. It’s no wonder, considering
Head Chef Corey Tang hails from the likes of
Rockpool and Bistro Guillaume to create this
street food inspired menu. We’re talking real
street food here, inspired by global influences
and delivering bold flavours. There’s special
hot-sauce chicken wings; glazed pork belly
with Vietnamese slaw; seasonal share plates
such as squid and sambal mayo; maple glazed
carrots with goats curd and thyme; rough cut
guacamole with tortilla chips. Fun, bold and
confident.
Feel like a night in? Then let Young George
come to you. The YG team can deliver pizza
and cold beer, premium wine, even a cheeky
bottle of mezcal right to your door! It’s
great if you’re having a party, or for those
times you feel like putting on the onesie and
tucking into a pizza or two in front of the
telly. This concept is one of a kind in WA
and YG is proud to offer this service at retail
prices! Online ordering makes it a cinch.

WHAT’S
ON
The ... and the short of it
AT THE
E
RNEST HEMINGWAY is
said to have bet a group
of authors he could write
a novel using six words.
On a restaurant napkin he
scrawled: “For sale, baby shoes.
Never worn.” and won $10 from
each of his writer mates. It’s six
words that never leaves you.
Perth is producing its own
flash fiction writers with the
inaugural Perth Shortest Short
Story competition, although
these fledgling authors get off
easy—their limit is 49 words.
A whopping 253 entries
poured in from across the
state, with topics ranging from
comedy and murder, to romance
and loss.
South Fremantle’s Geoffrey
Batt’s short, short story had a
touch of Henry Lawson about it.
“A thousand golden points lay
revealed as the pan cleared to the
practiced rhythm of the prospector’s
wrists. A thousand stars in a frosted
night sky. All he’d promised her. All
the years till she tired of dusty floors
and faded curtains. Salted tears
tracked down his weathered cheeks.”
Harry Schmitz tried his hand
at creative writing aged 63,
inspired by hype around the first
world war.
“His slouch hat suddenly hit
the sand. Puzzled, Jock picked
it up. Still the Coolgardie dust
ingrained on its brim. Still the
briny smell of weeks at sea on
the troop ship to this Turkish
beach. Then he saw it: The entry
and exit holes of a sniper bullet.”
The winner was set to be
announced on Friday night,
and will receive $1000 in cash
and prizes from sponsors
Boffins Bookshop, along with a
mentoring session with awardwinning author Natasha Lester.

Sketching sadness
• Chili Leadabrand and Jupiter McKenzie with their works. Photo by Matthew Dwyer
D
ARTS
JENNY D’ANGER
EPRESSION IN DAYS
is a confronting title
for a 12-year-old’s first
art exhibition. But then Chili
Leadabrand is no ordinary
pre-teen.
What’s even more
extraordinary is she was 11
when she created her series of 22
sketches.
Speaking to the Herald, Chili
exudes a confidence well above
her years, despite confessing
to nerves at the prospect of
making a speech at the gallery
she’s sharing with fellow upand-comer Jupiter McKenzie
(Airhead’s the exhibition).
Chili’s pencil sketches have a
slightly Leunig look to them and
the humour is almost as dark,
but she smiles at suggestions
she’s expressing pre-teen angst.
“Most people assume I’m
depressed because the series is
called Depression in Days, but I
observe other people’s sadness
and put it into my sketches,” she
says.
“I did these last year and a
few of my friends were down in
the dumps.”
Living in Bali at the time,
where artist mother Alia ran
workshops, she attended the
island’s international school for
eight months.
A running theme through
Chili’s sketches is a motif of
a huge head, with strangely
deformed legs.
“I was drawing a little person
in class, in Bali, a huge head
and I added little sticks to it and
thought it looked pretty cool.”
Last week’s opening saw 16
of 22 works sell.
McKenzie, 24, hails from the
eastern states and art was more a
hobby until he began lodging at
the Leadabrands’ Hamilton Hill
home, where his quirky oil-oncanvas images were encouraged
in a hothouse of creativity.
There’s a common thread
to McKenzie and Chili
Leadabrand’s art, and images
of huge heads, with large, wide
eyes, float like balloons over
bodies dressed in period dress,
or simply in the the air, their
strings trailing below.
They are beautifully executed
and slightly comical, but with a
vaguely disturbing subtext.
McKenzie’s art has been
described as lowbrow, (also
called pop surrealism) with roots
in underground comics and
punk.
It’s a label that delights
McKenzie: “[My] paintings
relate to my twisted views of the
modern world,” he says.
Airhead and Depression in Days
are on at Pakenham Street Art
Studio at the corner of Leake
and Pakenham Streets, until
December 7.

DIY delight
by JENNY D’ANGER
W
HETHER
it’s learning
tuckpointing at
Tafe, self-taught tile-making
to replace fancy ridgecapping or making ornate
solid steel security doors—
there’s nothing the vendor of
this East Fremantle delight
hasn’t turned his hand to to
ensure the heritage home
was returned to pristine
condition.
He also made the stunning
jarrah staircase leading to a
huge attic/loft conversion.
And for good measure
his uncle restored the many
beautiful stained glass
windows, and made quite a
few for the extension that are
so good you’d never know
they aren’t the same age as the
originals.
“It’s been a labour of love,”
the vendor tells the Herald.
Throughout the six-bedroom
home jarrah floors have been
buffed to a rich deep chocolate,
wide skirting boards abound, as
do decorative ceiling roses and
ornate fireplaces.
Dubbed the “green room”
the central lounge is an elegant
space with cream embossed
wallpaper and a soft-sage green
ceiling, picked out with a darker
green.
A sweeping rear extension
houses the huge kitchen and
dining/family area.
A baby grand piano is
dwarfed by this vast space,
which is in keeping with the
home’s heritage, with acres of
jarrah floors, ornate balustrade
and ceiling roses.
Tasmanian oak and black
and white granite feature in the
kitchen, with its walk-in pantry
and bank of lovely stained glass
windows.
The spacious main bedroom
has lovely bayed stained glass
windows overlooking the
delightful front garden.
A couple of former bedrooms
went to create a walk-in robe
and federation ensuite, with
double vanities and a deep,
claw-foot bath and separate
shower.
The ultimate teenage pad is
tucked under the roof, where
there’s a spacious sitting room,
bedroom and massive study.
Not to mention a storage area
that would make a great games
room.

hen deciding to sell, some property
owners choose to undertake the task
of promoting and selling privately
without the assistance of a licensed real estate
agent.
Often, the motivation behind such a
decision is premised on the sellers’ view that
real estate agents’ selling fees are excessive.
However, more often than not, selling privately
does not save these sellers money at all. This
is partly because private sellers do not have
the marketing resources to access all potential
buyers active in any given market. It follows
that in the event of a successful private sale,
there is always the chance that a buyer with
superior purchasing power was not aware the
property was for sale.
Also, private sellers do not have access
to the most popular property web sites such
as www.reiwa.com or www.realestate.com.au
and with many buyers solely using the web to
search for property nowadays, finding buyers
can be challenging. The alternative is print
based advertising which is expensive and, on
an agent’s intrinsic value
lies in their acting at
“arms length
its own, not powerful enough nowadays to
attract all active buyers.
Apart from the difficulties private sellers
experience in accessing effective marketing
media, part of an agent’s intrinsic value lies in
their acting at “arms length.” Many a private
seller cannot understand why after many weeks
of home opens everyone tells them their home
When it comes to outdoor
activities the garden of this
1126sqm home is a gem, with
a covered alfresco area off the
house, and a timber gazebo,
sitting over a massive pond,
both built by the vendor.
He also created the soaring
artificial rock waterfall that
sends water trickling into the
pond.
There’s grass for the kids and
plenty of trees, including several
massive macadamia trees, and a
huge vegie garden.
And the massive workshop/
garage is worth a look on its
own, with acres of bench space
and an inspection pit.
Close to schools, shops, cafes
and the river, “family home”
is writ large over this fantastic
abode.

is lovely, but no one has offered to buy it.
Buyers are normally too polite to tell the seller
what they really think; that the property is overpriced, is too small, too cluttered, etc but they
happily tell the agent their raw opinions on
value.
Most private sellers lack sufficient
knowledge of contractual procedure, an
understanding of the Strata Titles Act for
example, planning and heritage issues and
matters concerning compliance and disclosure.
And very few private sellers have an intimate
knowledge of the Joint Form of General
Conditions for the Sale of Land, the 23 page
legal document that forms part of the sale
contract.
Arguably the most important reason to use
a REIWA agent when selling is the transfer of
much of the risk from the principal (the seller)
to the agent. In the rare instance something
goes awry with the sale, the seller is entitled
to look to their agent for guidance and, if
appropriate, apportion blame if the agent has
acted improperly.
Professional REIWA agents can make the
task of selling property look relatively easy;
I assure you it is not and the risks of selling
privately far outweigh any vague possibility of
saving the selling fee.
These comments are the writer’s own and do not necessarily reflect the current opinions and policies of the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia.

by JENNY D’ANGER
F you’re looking for ubermodern style, elegance
and sophistication you
need look further than this
Panarea Crest home.
The vendor turned to his
European roots when it came to
finishes for this five-bedroom/
three-bathroom abode,
including the flooring which
is a high-impact commercial
material from Germany. Hard
to describe it’s beautiful to look
at—and walk on—with thin
grey lines swirling and looping
across a white background.
Sitting high on the Yangebup
ridge the house was built to
make the most of ocean views,
so the ground floor contains all
the bedrooms, except the main,
along with a spacious guest
suite, complete with walk-in
robe and generous ensuite.
A theatre/family room looks
out over the pool and alfresco
dining area.
Walls of glass lead out to this
jaw-dropping covered patio.
with built-in fridge, dishwasher
and oven.
Open the bifold doors and
invite balmy days in, or close
them to enjoy being toasty
warm while you cook up a
storm on the built-in barbecue.
“I call this the summer
kitchen,” the vendor says.
Glass and micro-corrugated
iron fencing ensures the pool
is hidden from prying eyes,
without losing the view.
The vendor drew a red line
through the architect’s plans for
a solid staircase in the spacious
hall, unwilling to compromise
his open-clean lines and instead
insisted on a floating staircase.
Uber style
A steel spine carries thick
timber steps covered in
toughened glass, while the glass
balustrade ensures nothing
disturbs sight lines to the patio.
The second level is a
sweeping open space slick and
minimalistic, with plenty of
natural light from a plentitude
of windows and doors.
The huge kitchen has
masses of caesar-stone bench
tops, including a spacious
island (with a double wine
cabinet built-in), state-of-the art
appliances and walk-in pantry.
Floor-to-ceiling glass leads to
a very generous balcony, with
glass balustrades to ensure the
view is uninterrupted.
The main bedrooms is as
stylish as it’s generous, with
a walk-in robe and a swish
ensuite.
The study next door could
also double as a nursery, the
vendor suggests.
When it came to designing a
home for this generous 615sqm
block, the vendor took onboard
what potential buyers had said
about his previous home.
“And decided to make this
house accommodate everything
people say they want to have.”
I’d say he’s nailed it with this
amazing abode.

TUART APARTMENTS
1 BEDROOM FROM $325,000 and 2 BEDROOM FROM $375,000
Nestled in a brand new development area is this group of great value apartments. Unmatched in style and quality in
the area for this price. A group of 17 apartments with 4 1 bedrooms and 13 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartments, built
by boutique builders Viva Developments. Viva Developments has proven to be a force in the building industry building
everything from small complexes to million dollar construction homes.
As per the builders reputation these exquisite apartments come with all the best fixtures and fittings. Starting with the high
ceilings and stone bench tops and attention to detail all the way down to the impressive 400x400 floor tiles.
Although these apartments are off the plan you only need $10,000 to secure your investment and lock it in at today’s
amazing price and move in or rent it when complete early 2016. A first home buyers dream and an investors “must buy.”
Choose from the downstairs apartments with courtyards up to 60sqm and larger, or go upstairs and get that open

1
No need to wait to move into your new home, these immaculate high quality apartments are ready to move into before Christmas. Secure
yourself a brand new 2 bed, 1 bath modern home in the heart of Fremantle built by bespoke builders Cottesloe Construction. A builder with
a reputation for attention to detail and absolute quality.
Over the complex of 10 exquisite units you have your choice of upstairs apartments with huge balconies of around 35 sqm, or downstairs
your choice of private courtyards from 19sqm to 69sqm. The apartments have been designed with outdoor living in mind to take advantage
of the beautiful weather.
Freshly built with an interior that will impress – a modern contemporary look with open plan living designed to incorporate your indoor outdoor
areas, whether it be courtyard or balcony / alfresco – it’s a fantastic place to relax or have the friends over to entertain. The kitchen is fitted
out with BOSCH dishwasher, Ariston stove, oven and washing machine.
Carpet in the 2 bedrooms with huge mirrors on the doors to a BIR with shelving. Tiles throughout the rest of the house with floor to ceiling tiles
in the sleek looking bathrooms. Alarmed, fitted with ducted reverse cycle air conditioning, your own locked storage space plus a bike rack
area this is truly a life styler’s find.
Easy to clean and very low maintenance, lock up and leave or stay local and enjoy all the fine things Fremantle has to offer. Whether that
is a walk to Galati’s for fresh produce, Frank’s Butcher Shop for something to put on the bbq, or many of the small cafes, restaurants, and
boutique bars this area has to offer. Perhaps a day at the beach or on the boat is more to your liking, your choices are endless.
For the astute investor you have a brand new 2 bedroom property only walking distance to Fremantle Hospital, Fremantle proper, and a
plethora of public transport options for travel to all parts of Perth.
Potential tenants can register with us now for an exciting opportunity.

Not all Electricians are the

turn up when they say, if at all
& when they do they are often
rude, unpleasant & leave you
with an unfair bill, a messy
house & feeling really annoyed.
Hi, I’m Dave from “My Sparky”.
I know good, reliable tradies are
hard to find, that’s why I

If you’re not happy at the end
you’ll receive $50 cash, on me.

Not all Electricians are the
same... most contractors don’t
turn up when they say, if at all
& when they do they are often
rude, unpleasant & leave you
with an unfair bill, a messy
house & feeling really annoyed.
Hi, I’m Dave from “My Sparky”.
I know good, reliable tradies are
hard to find, that’s why I
guarantee you’ll have me arrive
on time. I’ll be courteous,
respectful & in uniform. I will
only do the best quality work - no
short cuts, then clean up after
the job & leave you with a smile.
If you’re not happy at the end
you’ll receive $50 cash, on me.

CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)
The good news is that the Moon will
be travelling through Pisces early in the
week, giving you a sense that you have plenty of room
in which to feel your myriad emotions. The bad news
is, there’s a lot of action in Sagittarius, which have you
feeling like things are going very fast.
LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)
This is an intriguing week for lions. The
fact that the Sun and various friends
are in Sagittarius, is inspiration to expand. Yet, Saturn in
Scorpio continues to have a hold on your mane as well.
Saturn is all about getting wise, by accepting obstacles
as gifts. So, expand with awareness.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
Often, when the Sun is in fire signs, the
world feels like it is moving too quickly
for your liking. Overwhelm doesn’t take long to kick
in, as your scales begin to be rocked and rolled. Yet,
when Sagittarius is involved, it’s not so. Take chances,
knowing that truth and beauty will flow.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
It’s party time for Centaurs. The Sun is
lavishing you with light. Venus is colouring
you with love. And Mercury is inviting you to be quickwitted and on the money. Mercury is the only tricky
one. To avoid his banana skin, you must remain true to
the originality of your insight.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
Mercury, the Sun and Venus, are all
on the opposite side of the sky, under
the constellation of Sagittarius, confronting you to be
very single-pointed and straight to the point. This is
no moment to be fluffing around. Your relationships
depend on your capacity for focus and passion.
The Herald is looking for an
enthusiastic scooter driver to deliver
the Herald on Fridays & Saturdays.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)
Venus is hot, adventurous and being very
honest, as she gallops her way through
Sagittarius. Where she goes, you go. Though your
head is down and you are focussed on getting the job
done, you will get the job done infinitely better, if you
remember to be truthful and adventurous.
Why not get paid for it by

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)
There is heaps of existential support for
passionate, fire-sign persons, such as
yourself right now. With the Sun in Sagittarius, you
have every permission in the book, to get up a head of
steam. The one proviso is that you also remember to
keep truth in mind. Be honest with yourself.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
The spotlight of the Sun has left you
alone. It’s moved into the sign of the
Centaur. You can take time out and consolidate your
understanding. Saturn will hold you steady, as the rest
of the world journeys round the cosmic carousel. Still,
you must step up. This is not the time to be small.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
As Mercury moves into Sagittarius, the part
of you that loves to take things slowly, will
start to feel like it has just hopped on a roller-coaster.
Though you might momentarily rue the decision to be
wildly adventurous, it will prove to be the right decision,
in the grand scheme of things.

the mud. This is your time of transformation. Go with
the wild horses of galloping change.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
Though you aren’t exactly in the thick of
things, you do have a unique perspective.
More and more, it is up to you to communicate your
view. When views from left-field are offered, there is
inevitably a period of complete misunderstanding. Bear
with this, until the dawn breaks.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
This is an odd week for feeling
understood. Your perspective is fully
attuned to the long view. Unfortunately the placement
of three planets in Sagittarius, means that many people
suddenly feel the need to rush. This is not your way.
Stick with your temperament. Avoid myopia.
