Human Health Aspects of bST Use
Evaluations by Medical, Scientific and Regulatory Groups
With approval of bovine somatotropin for use in dairy cows, some of the public discussion has focused on the
safety of animal products for human consumption. It is important that this discussion deal responsibly and
accurately with the issues. Unfortunately, a few special interest groups have been actively involved in a
misinformation campaign and implied that food safety issues have not been adequately addressed. These
groups raise issues such as bST or IGF causing cancer, antibodies or other devastating health effects, and
imply that there is widespread concern in the scientific and medical communities. There are areas of biology in
which knowledgeable experts disagree, but safety of foods from bST-treated animals is not one of them
Because bST was one of the first products of biotechnology virtually every major medical association and
scientific society evaluated the safety of bST. In addition, regulatory agencies in over 50 countries have
evaluated the human safety aspects of bST use. Without exception these medical associations, scientific
societies and regulatory agencies have concluded there are no human safety concerns about food derived
from animals supplemented with bST. Below is a partial listing of some of these groups:
