In the summer of 2013, the
Patriot League announced the
creation of the Patriot League
Network.
For the second consecutive
year, fans can watch all of the
home basketball games (and
conference road games) not being televised on the CBS
Sports Network for free anywhere around the world on a
computer or mobile device by going to
http://www.PatriotLeague.tv.
NCAA Tournament: 1959, 1983, 1988, 1990, 1997, 2002, 2011
LACK OF CHARITY
• Much noise was made last season of referees
calling games more closely ... BU ranked 313th
nationally in FT attempts (573) but defensively
ranked 34th in fouls committed per game
(17.0).
HAPPY NEW YEAR
• With 70-60 win vs. Holy Cross in January,
BU opened both the new year and conference
schedule with a win for first time since 2005,
snapping eight-game losing streaks.
HOT HAND
• BU finished 2012-13 ranked 90th nationally
at 44.9 FG% ... Finished over 43.0% for first
time since 1998 and led the AE for first time
since 1993-94 (.472).
• In 2013-14, Terriers finished at 45.2 percent
(124th nationally) overall and 44.9 percent in
conference play.
PROTECTING THE BALL
• In 2012-13, BU helped itself greatly with its
ball handling skills ... Terriers led the AE in
both assists (13.6) and assist-turnover ratio
(1.1) while finishing second in turnover margin
(1.67).
• Last led AE in assists and in assist-turnover
ratio in 2003-04 at 14.48 apg and 1.20,
respectively.
• In 2013-14, BU led the Patriot League in
turnover margin (1.91) after not faring better
than fourth in turnover margin in a conference
since posting a 1.79 mark in the 2004-05
season.
BOMBS AWAY
• Currently riding streak of 556 games with at
least one made 3-pointer ... Run began following 0-for-10 performance against Vermont on
2-10-96.
60-70 THRESHOLD
• BU is 11-30 (.268) dating back to 2010-11
season when opponents score 70+ pts ... In
2013-14, Terriers went 16-2 when holding
opponents below 70 pts.
• On offensive end, BU is 6-26 (.188) since
start of 2010-11 when scoring below 60 pts.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE ACTION
• BU only has one active double-double
after finishing last season with 15 ... Nathan
Dieudonne recorded his first with 16 points
and a career-high 12 rebounds vs. Eastern
Washington.
NBA COACHING TREE
• BU currently has ties to a pair of NBA head
coaches ... 1980 team MVP Brett Brown (‘83) is
in his second season as the head coach of the
Philadelphia 76ers ... Bobcats head coach Steve
Clifford was an assistant at BU from 1990-94.
• Former Terrier head coaches Rick Pitino (‘78’83) and John Kuester (‘83-’85) previously had
stints in the NBA as well.
TEAM IMPACT
• In fall of 2012, Dylan Flynn became a member
of BU’s squad through Team IMPACT, a nonprofit chartered to improve the quality of life
for children facing life-threatening illnesses by
establishing and expanding vibrant team-based
support networks.
• Flynn was diagonosed early in life with
neurofibromatosis ... Team presented him with
his own jersey at the 2013 banquet in April ...
Players recently joined him at the Steps2Cure
NF Walk at Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield,
Mass., for the second consecutive year.
GRADUATION SUCCESS RATE
• On Oct. 29, NCAA announced that men’s
basketball was one of 11 BU teams to earn a
perfect 100 GSR ... Data reflects an aggregate
average of incoming students from 2004-05,
2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08.
Meet joe joneS
• Jones joined the Terriers after serving as
associate head coach at Boston College in June
2011 after helping the Eagles reach 2011 NIT
2nd Round.
• Joe Jones and his staff BU were named the
second toughest to recruit against at the midmajor level by ESPN’s Jeff Goodman this past
summer.
• Served as head coach at Columbia (2003-10)
and assistant at Villanova (1997-03) & Hofstra
(1994-97).
• In 2006-07, Columbia went 16-12, earning
the program’s most wins since 1991-92 ... The
Class of 2010 would finish with 26 Ivy League
victories, marking the most conference wins
by a Columbia class since the Class of 1994.
• His older brother, Joe, is in his 15th season
as head coach at Yale.
HOW TO FOLLOW
• All home BU games and road conference
games not on CBS Sports Network will be
available for free viewing on the Patriot League
Network at PatriotLeague.tv ... Fans can listen
to longtime broadcaster Doug Brown at every
game through the Terrier Sports Radio Network
(GoTerriers.com/tsrn).
• For social media, follow BU on instagram (@
BostonUMBB), twitter (@BostonUMBB) and
facebook (/BostonUMBB).

fourth SEASON • suny oswego ‘87, ‘89
With 20 years of coaching
experience, Joe Jones enters the
2014-15 season in his fourth
year at the helm with the Boston
University men’s basketball team,
as the Terriers look to defend
their Patriot League regular
season title and clinch their third
straight postseason tournament
appearance.
The 2013-14 season proved
to be a memorable one, as BU
finished atop the conference
standings for the first time since 2004. The Terriers went
15-3 in league play and finished with a 24-11 overall
record for the second most wins in school history and
just one win shy of the record set in 1996-97. After
making their 16th overall appearance in a conference
championship final, they advanced to the National
Invitation Tournament (NIT) for the team’s second
consecutive postseason appearance following the 2013
CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
In-season highlights include Jones becoming the
first-ever BU coach to claim two victories against the
Atlantic Coast Conference when the Terriers won at
Maryland (83-77) on Dec. 21 after topping Boston College
(75-61) at Conte Forum in 2011. Under his guidance, BU
averaged 71.2 ppg and finished the year shooting 45.2
percent from the field, the team’s highest mark since
1992-93. The team set two team records with 64 points
in a first half against UMass Lowell and a 66.1 shooting
percent mark against Lafayette in the PL tournament.
Individually, Maurice Watson Jr. set a school and PL
record with 248 assists in a season while also tallying 74
steals, second most in a season. D.J. Irving finished his
collegiate career ranked ninth in scoring, while classmate
Dom Morrisbecame just the sixth Terrier in program history
to reach 1,000 points and 700 rebounds.
On the defensive end, BU went 17-3 when holding
opponents below 70 points and led a conference in
turnover margin for first time since 2005 at +1.91. Season
highlights included holding fellow Patriot League member
Navy to its lowest offensive output (32) since 1943 and
limiting the league’s top scoring offense (Lafayette) to
just 54 points in a 91-54 rout. The margin of victory was
the largest ever for a Patriot League quarterfinal game.
BU’s success was a continuation of the momentum
built from the 2012-13 season. Despite being banned
from the 2013 America East tournament due to the move
to the Patriot League, the Terriers (17-13, 11-5 AE)
finished second in the league standings and swept both
of the conference tournament finalists en route to the
CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
Besides the tournament ban, the 2012-13 season
was presented with many others challenges, including the
graduation of six players from the previous season. With a
recruiting class heralded by ESPN.com as one of the best
at the mid-major level, BU would go on to lead the AE in
field goal shooting percentage (.449) for the first time
since 1994 and in assists (13.6 per game) for the first
time since 2004. Defensively, they held nine straight nonconference opponents below 70 points, a feat last seen at
BU over 50 years ago.
In Jones’ first season on Commonwealth Ave.,
the Terriers recorded a 12-4 (.750) record in AE action,
marking the best-ever winning percentage in conference
play by a first-year head coach in BU history. Highlights
included the Terriers beating BC at Conte Forum for the
first time since 1974 and snapping Rhode Island’s 32-game
home win streak vs. non-conference teams.
Boston University named Joe Jones, who was most
recently the associate head coach at BC, the 25th head
coach of the men’s basketball program, on June 23, 2011.
He left BC after helping the Eagles go 21-13 and advanced
to the second round of the NIT.
Prior to joining the Eagles, Jones served as head
coach at Columbia from 2003 to 2010. In the season
prior to his arrival, they went 2-25 overall and 0-14 in
conference play. The following year, he led them to a
10-17 (6-8) record, marking the third-best single-season
turnaround in Ivy League history.
In 2006-07, the Lions captured 16 wins, the best
performance by a Columbia squad since 1992-93. The Class
of 2010 would finish with 26 Ivy League victories, marking
the most conference wins by a Columbia class since the
Class of 1994. In addition, the group became the third
consecutive class to record 53 wins, a feat that hadn’t
been reached since the Class of 1979.
Jones previously served as an assistant coach at
Villanova for six seasons (1997-2003) - four years under
Steve Lappas and two years under Jay Wright - and was
named one of the nation’s top recruiters by Eastern
Basketball magazine in 1999. During his tenure, the
Wildcats advanced to postseason play in five of the six
seasons and compiled a 105-83 record.
His collegiate coaching career began with Hofstra
(1994-97) as an assistant coach under Wright. During his
first season, he helped recruit the No. 1 ranked class in
the conference. His recruiting efforts assisted in laying
the groundwork for the Pride’s rise in prominence that
culminated in a three-year record of 72-22.
Before entering the collegiate coaching arena, Jones
served as head coach at Long Island’s Comsewogue High
School for two years (1993-94). The Long Island native
was a four-year letterman at the State University of
New York at Oswego (1983-87) where he graduated with
a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1987 and a
master’s degree in counseling in 1989.
Jones and his wife, Kristin, have two children
- daughter, Sydney (12) and son, JJ (8). His older brother,
James, just completed his 15th season as the head coach
at Yale.
