Course details
Health Services is a rapidly expanding industry, and those choosing to work in this sector can expect to
have excellent employment outcomes both now and into the future. This course has been designed as a
key starting point for those hoping to go on, with the help of further study, to a future career as a
Nutritionist or Dietician.
This entry level program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to undertake work
as an assistant to professional Nutritionists and Dieticians working in the health industry.
Topics include:
provide assistance to nutrition and dietetic services
prepare foods according to dietary and cultural needs
follow basic food safety practices
recognise healthy body systems in a health care context
communicate and work effectively in health
participate in occupational health and safety processes
comply with infection control policies and procedures
interact effectively with children
assist with client movement

Career prospects:
This qualification is for those wanting to become assistants to Dieticians and Food Service Managers within the
Health Industry. Occupations for this program may include Nutrition Assistant and Dietetic Assistant.
Hours of study:
This is an 18 week blended program delivered at Ashmore incorporating classroom delivery with self-directed
study. Classes are held on Monday 10.15am-3.00pm, Tuesday 8.00am-12.15pm, Wednesday 8.00am-12.15pm
and Thursday 8.00am-12.15pm. Outside of these hours you are expected to complete self-paced home study to
complete assessments.
Resources required:
It is recommended that students purchase a USB storage device.
Computer Specifications
The minimum computer specifications for students accessing my.TAFE are as follows:
Internet connection (ADSL or Cable Broadband recommended)
Windows PC or Apple Mac - please note: portable devices (smartphones, iPads, tablets, slates) are not
supported by my.TAFE, and may not work properly for assessments
Minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels
Computer running Windows XP/Vista or Apple Macintosh OSX 10.1
Minimum browser versions: Firefox 3.6 (highly recommended for students), Google Chrome 8, Safari 5,
Internet Explorer 7 with Google Chrome Frame installed, Internet Explorer 8 (older versions of browsers may
not correctly display information)
Entry requirements
There are no entry requirements outlined in the Training Package.
TAFE Queensland Gold Coast requires the following entry requirements to be met:
Completed Year 10 or equivalent with sound achievement in English, Mathematics and computer skills or,
Mature age with sound language, literacy and numeracy skills.
Permanent resident of Australia (this program is not available to international students)
Note: Many industry employers require that health professionals obtain the below to be employed in their
organisations. These requirements ARE NOT a requirement for this program, however the Institute strongly
recommends that students enrolling in any health program consider their eligibility to obtain the following
documentation prior to enrolment.
Current Australian First Aid Certificate with a current competency in CPR
Records of Hepatitis B vaccination or blood test result showing immunity
Evidence of TB screening
