Tourism Secretary, Stephanie Klett, will be the keynote speaker at the Shawano Country Chamber of
Commerce Fall Luncheon

Menominee Casino Resort
Conference Center in
Keshena. The cost is $20

the Chamber and $30 for
others. Corporate tables of

Appointed by Governor Walker in January 2011, Stephanie
Klett spearheads the
state’s $17.5 billion
tourism industry which employs over 185,000
people. Focusing on the brand of fun, travel
expenditures are up $2.7 billion in the last three
years. The Department has also won numerous
national and international awards for excellence
in marketing.
Under Klett’s leadership the Department has
experienced a resurgence thanks in large
measure to award-winning creative marketing
efforts, including the recruitment of Hollywood
directors and celebrities (with Wisconsin ties)
for advertising campaigns. These efforts are
realizing a 6 to 1 return for Wisconsin taxpayers. Under her leadership, the Department
earned 47 national and international marketing
and public relations awards in 2011-2013; eight
Travel Wisconsin Welcome Centers are open
for business; and new industry customer service and development programs are helping
communities grow their local economies.
Klett believes Wisconsin Tourism has a big role
in creating jobs and improving the quality of life
for Wisconsin residents. She understands the
power of partnerships, shining the light on Wisconsin’s hidden and lesser-known treasures,
and working with the dynamic tourismrelated organizations around the state.
Klett has been promoting Wisconsin for
over two decades, logging more than
one million miles criss-crossing the state during
her 20-year career hosting the award winning
Discover Wisconsin Television & Radio series.
She has received eight Emmy nominations from
the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, finally bringing home the Golden statue in the
category of “Individual Excellence for OnCamera Hosting” in 2010.
Many recognize Klett from her year as 1992
Miss Wisconsin. She was a Bert Parks Talent
winner at the 1993 Miss America Finals in Atlantic City – the first cornet player in its history.
During her year as Miss Wisconsin, she created
the ATTITUDE ON AIDS program to educate
teens on the facts of HIV and AIDS. Her charity
work has continued with the “Spotlight on Wisconsin” benefit, helping to raise money for the
AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin, Beloit
Regional Hospice, and the Stateline Area Boys
& Girls Clubs. She was also the 2013 Honorary
Chair for AIDS Walk Wisconsin, which raised
over $341,000.
This event is presented by Gold Sponsors Menominee Casino Resort and North Star Mohican
Casino Resort.

Tigerton Businesses Receive Vision 2017 Grant
Jeff and Pamela
Suehring have received
a Shawano Country
Vision 2017 Façade
Improvement grant
totaling $2,360.50. The
grant was awarded to
help cover costs to
paint and install new
signage on their commercial building at 217
Cedar Street in downtown Tigerton. The
building houses two
businesses owned by
the Suehrings: The
Tigerton Laundry Basket and Fisher +
Ruckle Sales & Service, Inc. “We would
not have been able to
make these improvements without this
grant. The new paint makes it more inviting to
our customers,” said Pamela Suehring.
Organizers are hoping
this and other façade
renovations supported
by Vision 2017 grants
will prompt neighboring business owners to
also fix up their storefronts. “The revitalization of a commercial
district often begins
with improvements to
a single building or
storefront. Even simple
changes such as repairs, a new paint job,
or a new sign signal
positive change and
often stimulates similar improvements in
neighboring buildings,” said Nancy Smith,
executive director of the Shawano Country
Chamber of Commerce.
Many believe a welcoming, vibrant business
district creates a positive first impression for
visitors and potential new residents.
Shawano Country Vision 2017 is a five-year
economic development plan strategically designed to address various needs of area businesses and communities. The plan’s overall
goal is to create jobs by implementing specific
action steps in key areas, including business expansion, attraction and recruitment; tourism/retail development and community
development. This plan was initiated two years ago by the board
“As lifelong residents of the Tigerton area it’s
our hope that this community will not only
stay alive, but thrive, for generations to come.
A nice looking Tigerton lets both visitors and
residents know we have pride in our community.” added Suehring. Dennis Heling, chief
economic development officer for Shawano
County Economic Progress, Inc., agrees façade and interior renovation activity supported by Vision 2017 grant programs are
important not just to the business owner, but
to the community at large. “Efforts to protect
and enhance our downtown business districts
are vital to strengthening our communities
and increasing quality of life for our residents,” said Heling.

Shawano or Menominee Counties can apply

Shawano Country Chamber Office/Visitor Center
Featured in Nation-Wide Publication
Shawano Country Chamber of
Commerce’s unique chamber office
building took second place in a
contest sponsored recently by The
Chamber Executive Network (CEN)
newsletter, a 30-year-old publication advising chambers of commerce leaders in the U.S. and Canada. The office is prominently featured in this month's issue of the
newsletter along with several other
winners and finalists from across
the country.
According to Dick Hakes, CEN Editor/Publisher, judges examined
nearly 100 top chamber offices housing both large and small chambers. The informal contest was designed to inspire subscribers by
featuring the excellent facilities progressive chambers are able to secure to serve their members, visitors and the general public. A wide
variety of offices were selected, including a "haunted" Chamber office
in Indiana, a sprawling, modern city-built facility in Texas and several
historic offices, such as a former general store in North Carolina and
railroad depots in Iowa and Oklahoma.
Nancy Smith, executive director of the Shawano Country Chamber of
Commerce, is pleased the chamber has received recognition for their
building. “It’s very rewarding to stack up so highly against chambers
of commerce throughout the country.” The Shawano Country
Chamber of Commerce office and
visitor center located at 1263
South Main Street in Shawano
opened in late 2007. According to
Smith, the purpose of constructing
a new building was to create a
very welcoming facility that represented the heritage and culture of
Shawano and Menominee Counties. It was also important the
facility was highly visible, easily
accessible, and provided plenty of parking for members and visitors.
The facility has succeeded in meeting these goals and as a result has
doubled the number of visitors it serves annually over the Chamber’s
previous location.
“This beautiful facility situated on the Wolf River showcases the pride
and passion we have in our area's culture, heritage and recreation,”
said Smith. “The Chamber is the first contact many potential new residents, business owners, and visitors have with our area. It has been
very rewarding to be in a facility that presents a very progressive and
welcoming first impression to visitors and newcomers,” added Smith.
The Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center is
open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. –
3 p.m. The information vestibule is open 24 hours every day.

Guarding Against
Harassment Claims
Submitted by: Melissa Moore, PHR KerberRose
Government Affairs Committee Chair
It's probably impossible for your company to eliminate any
chance of harassment, but there are precautions you can take to
help win a lawsuit filed by an employee:

Above all, have a sound company policy
against harassment, which includes discrimination based on sex, race, color, religion, national origin, age or disability.

Make sure your employees are aware of the
policy. Spread the word through orientation
sessions and your employee handbook.

Require staff members to sign an agreement
indicating that they understand the policy.

At least once a year, train your employees and
managers on the subject of harassment and
its consequences. Employees must be told
how to report incidents and feel they can without retaliation.
In some cases, you must be proactive. In one case, the EEOC
said if there is sexually or racially offensive graffiti in the workplace, a company shouldn't wait for a complaint before erasing it.
To protect your company after a harassment complaint, here's a
checklist to help conduct a thorough investigation:

Listen to the complaint but stay neutral and
don't validate the accusation.

Take down a statement in writing and ask the
employee to initial it for accuracy.

Assure the employee that you will take action.

Discuss the problem with legal counsel.

Meet with key individuals and investigate the
complaint (or hand the inquiry over to a neutral
third party).

Don't confine the investigation to the single
incident. For example, does the alleged harasser have a history of similar behavior in the
past?

Take appropriate action if you determine harassment did take place, including a warning,
disciplinary action, demotion, transfer or dismissal. Carefully document your findings.

Institute additional training if your investigation
uncovers a pattern of harassment or ignorance about the subject.
Even after conducting a thorough investigation and taking appropriate action, an employee may still sue the company. But the
seriousness of your inquiry, along with a comprehensive policy
and adequate training, can help convince the court that you did
everything possible to provide a harassment-free workplace.
