Escherichia coli D-malate dehydrogenase affords bacterial growth on D-malate as carbon source by catalyzing its oxidative decarboxylation into
pyruvate (left reaction). Remarkably, the enzyme also features a high promiscuous activity on 3-isopropylmalate (right reaction) and is capable of
