Make a little bouquet of the sufferings of Jesus
and carry them in the bosom of the soul.”
St. Paul of the Cross
To begin with sports, I am riding high and Washington
fans probably not so much! My Packers had an amazing come
back victory against Miami Sunday afternoon. Sadly, I was not
able to see this nationally televised game, but I heard about the
touchdown pass with six seconds left to lift Green Bay over the
Dolphins. Washington fans on the other hand had little to
celebrate as the Redskins continued their losing ways and the
Nationals unfortunately were not able to progress further into
the MLB playoffs. The message here is that the Packers teach
us never to give up and those Washington teams remind us that
things don’t always work out how we want them to.
Moving on to other topics, the first I want to address is
Sermon on the Mount (SOM), our adult education program here
at St. Mary’s. Typically we would have a series during the
month of October. This program is coordinated by our director
of religious education (DRE). As you know our new DRE is Fr.
Barnes. Along with all of his other duties, as I mentioned a
couple of weeks ago, he is doing a great job. To give him a bit
of a break, however, we will not have a SOM series this fall; we
will in January as usual. We will also have our usual Advent
reflection series on the first three Tuesday evenings of that
season.
Another topic I briefly want to address is our nursery
which is provided during the 10:00 A.M Mass on Sundays. This
service is located in the parish Lyceum and is conducted by the
parents whose children participate as a kind of “coop” concept.
Currently, Jean-Marie O’Neil is coordinating this parish effort for
families with young children who may want to take advantage of
this service. Jean-Marie can be reached at 703-548-0657 if you
have any questions. The reason I even mention the nursery is
that we have seen a rather drastic decline in its use. It may be
that families are unaware of the nursery or perhaps they no
longer have a need of this service, preferring to keep the
children with them at Mass. Nonetheless, we want you to know
this service is provided.
Yet another topic I want to mention is our St. Vincent
de Paul Society (SVdP). They continue to do outstanding work
in our parish, trying to assist those in need. They are always
looking for additional volunteers to help with this effort, so that
no one is over burdened. It is about this time of year that a
representative of SVdP speaks after all Masses one weekend
making us more aware of what they do and asking for new
volunteers. They decided this year not to do that, but they still
need you. They accept donations as well. A good portion of
the poor box goes to them, but unfortunately those contributions
have been down over the past several months, while the
requests for help are up. Right now the greater need is
volunteers, so if you are interested please contact Burwell
Downs at 703-967-3093. They would be most appreciative.
The final topic I want to talk about this week is our
Oktoberfest, which is next Sunday at the school from 2:00 to
5:00 P.M. This has proven to be a great parish-wide event.
The food is outstanding and generally a good time is had by all.
There is more information about this in the bulletin. Obviously,
something like this doesn’t just happen. Many make it what it is
and many of those volunteers have been doing this from the
beginning, now for over ten years. It was Emma Lopo-Sullivan
and Kim Sackett who have headed up this event each year.
This year Kim is on her own, more or less, because, as you
may have heard, Emma, usually a bundle of energy, suffered a
very serious health set-back this past July. Thankfully she is
doing better, but she still needs our prayers.
In Christ,
Fr. Kleinmann

“Therefore, be constant in practicing every virtue, and especially in imitating
the patience of our dear Jesus, for this is the summit of pure love. Live in
such a way that all may know that you bear outwardly as well as inwardly
the image of Christ Crucified, the model of all gentleness and mercy. For if a
man is united inwardly with the Son of the living God, he also bears his
likeness outwardly by his continual practice of heroic goodness, and
especially through a patience reinforced by courage, which does not
complain either secretly or in public. Conceal yourselves in Jesus crucified,
and hope for nothing except that all men be thoroughly converted to his
will.”

their own hearts obstacles to
My Mercy, which so greatly wants
to act within them.
My Mercy works in all those
hearts which open their doors

Conversion, as well as
perseverance, is a grace of
My Mercy.”

ADORATION OF THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT
At the heart of our Catholic faith a priceless
treasure is our belief in the living presence of Jesus in
the Eucharist. We are blessed to be able to receive
Him in Holy Communion during the Holy Eucharist of
the Mass and here at St. Mary's we are privileged to
have another opportunity to have a "“spiritual
communion”, "where in silent prayer before the
Blessed Sacrament we can open our entire being to
Christ's presence. This internal, consistent dialogue
with Him can also be the most peaceful and satisfying
hour of our entire week.
With transforming mercy our Lord will strengthen
our wills, teach us humility, and help us grow in love.Think of spending just
one hour per week Our Lord. Sign-up sheets for a new session running
from November through January are in the back of the church. Adoration is
on Thursdays from 12:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., concluding with a Holy Hour.
