Community Planning & Development Policy Landmark Preservation 3/4/2014 Administrative Review for Signs in the Lower Downtown Historic District - Adopted by the Lower Downtown Design Review Board 12/6/12 - Revisions adopted by the Lower Downtown Design Review Board 11/7/13 On December 6, 2012, the Lower Downtown Design Review Board delegated review and approval of wall signs in the Lower Downtown Historic District to Landmark Preservation staff provided specific design criteria are met. All other sign applications must be forwarded to the Lower Downtown Design Review Board for consideration. The following signage can be approved by staff: Signage in Storefront Sign Band: Landmark Preservation staff can approve signage in storefront sign bands, provided all of the following criteria are met: • One sign per business located over doorway/storefront in existing sign band • 12 square feet total, with cumulative built up depth of 2-1/2” or less • One or two materials – acrylic/aluminum/bronze or other appropriate material • Could be individual letters or wall sign with backing • Rectangular in shape • Size appropriate for scale and proportions of building façade, and for building use • Fully within sign band and not covering or obscuring view of architectural details • Minimal anchor points or mounted in mortar joints where possible • Non-illuminated Example of Individual Letters in Storefront Sign Band Landmark Preservation staff is solely responsible for determining if the above criteria are met. 201 W. Landmark Preservation staff is solely responsible for determining if the above criteria are met. Window and Door Signs: Landmark Preservation staff can approve up to three (3) first-floor window/door signs for a business provided the following criteria are met for all windows and doors: • Signs are primarily transparent • Simple letters and graphics AND For signage on doors: For signage on windows: • No larger than 6 square feet in size on door • No more than 20% of window area for any one window • No more than 15% of window area can be signage of an opaque material or having an opaque effect Example of window and door signs Neon signs or sign clusters are acceptable if reasonably organized Example of opaque window sign Note: In addition to the signage delineated here, business are allowed up to 4 square foot of business identification signage (up to 2 signs) on each street frontage without a permit. Additional requirements apply. Refer to Section 10.10.3.1 of the Denver Zoning Code for additional information. Awning Signs: Landmark Preservation staff can approve awning signs provided the following criteria are all met: • High quality materials • Open on sides • Signage is 10 square foot or less per face Example of awning sign Landmark Preservation staff is solely responsible for determining if the above criteria are met.
