The Lonely Ember
A member of a community service organization, who previously had been attending meetings regularly,
stopped going. After a few weeks, a friend decided to visit him.
It was a chilly evening. The friend found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the
reason for his friend's visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a big chair near the fireplace and waited.
The friend made himself comfortable but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the play of
the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, the friend took the fire tongs, carefully picked up
a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone. Then he sat back in his chair,
still silent. The host watched all this in quiet fascination. As the one lone ember's flame diminished, there
was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and "dead as a door nail."
Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. Just before the friend was ready to leave, he picked
up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow once
more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it. As the friend reached the door to leave, his
host said, "Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery reminder of the importance of
being part of something bigger than myself."

A Reminder to All Members
The chapter meets the first Tuesday of every month
at the Holiday Inn. Each meeting we kick of the night
with a social, followed by dinner, a wonderful speaker
& our regular business meeting.
Kristi is available for any comments, questions or
concerns. She will try very hard to respond in a
timely manner. She may not have all the answers,

During the business meeting we decide on several
agenda items and sometimes, as an Association, a
vote is needed. Some items require a quorum to be
present in order to pass the vote, so we need as many
members as possible to attend. We will send out a
notification to the members when this type of vote will

This workshop is an EFAM favorite every year with new content every year. We’ll
demonstrate free or cheap utilities, applications, and websites (and the occasional
piece of hardware) that fill the gaps in the large applications suites. In this session,
we’ll take a tour of several hot new products that won’t bust your budget and might
make you a heroine or hero in the eyes of your organization.

Collaboration and Productivity Online Databases Online Storage & Document Collaboration OFFICE WEB APPS ON WINDOWS LIVE With the release of Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft is also rolling out Office Web Apps, a competitor to Google Apps. Web Apps allows you to work from virtually anywhere with the familiar Office functionality you use every day. If you have an internet connection, you can access, edit, and share documents easily—and store them to Windows Live using your Windows Live ID, so they’re never farther away than your PC or smartphone. With the Web Apps for organizations, you’ll also be able to post your work on Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and be able to edit, save, and share your work. PRICE: FREE http://www.microsoft.com/office/2010/en/office‐web‐apps NOTE: On May 14, 2010, Microsoft announced that it will combine Microsoft Office Live Workspace with Windows Live SkyDrive when it rolls out Office Web Apps so you’ll be able to store, edit, and share documents all in one place. MICROSOFT LIVE MESH With Live Mesh, you can synchronize files with all of your devices, so you always have the latest versions handy. Access your files from any device or from the web, easily share them with others, and get notified whenever someone changes a file. PRICE: FREE, maximum 5 GB http://www.mesh.com NOMADESK With NomaDesk, you can create virtual file servers that you keep private, share with a team, or make available to the public. You and your invited guests can upload any kind of document to the file server. With team file servers, users can download the NomaDesk desktop application or access files online. With the desktop application installed, NomaDesk file servers look like any other shared drive in Windows Explorer. Any changes made to files on the file servers are synced to the other users’ computers so everyone has a local copy that they can access online or off. Every time a file is changed or a new file is saved on your server it gets back up to the cloud. Since your files are backed up to redundant servers in the cloud, NomaDesk provides instant disaster recovery. Also has a mobile phone app so you can access files from your iPhone or Blackberry. PRICE: $50/year for a Personal Fileserver; $15/month for a Team Fileserver for unlimited number of users http://www.nomadesk.com 10
