ditching your moisturiser thinking humidity will
do it for you, you're wrong. ln fact, moisturising
is probably the skincare step you should never
skip because it yields so many benefits. We
asked four doctors to explain how it helps.

when exposed to sunlight, skin produces
pigments to shield itself from the damaging
rays, says Dr Calvin Chan, medical director
of Calvin Chan Aesthetic & Laser Clinic. This
occurs evenly in healthy skin, but dehydration
combined with age and toxin overload can
cause the pigment factories - melanocytes - to
overproduce melanin, resulting in dark patches.
Thirsty skin also tends to become rough and
appear dull as it does not ref lect light well.
To remedy the situation, You could
try dermatologist-administered therapies like
hyaluronic acid filler treatments - where the
protein (also produced naturally by your body
to retatn moisture) is injected at multiple spots
under the skin to keep it plump and hydrated
for up to a year. Prices start from $800 at
Dr Chan's clinic.
Alternatively, you could treat yourself
to the popular Rehydrating Replenishing
Treatment ($170) at Lancome Beauty lnstitute
(#82-40, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands,
tel. 6688-7666). Gentle and soothing, it's the
ideal pre-party treatment, boosting skin's
luminosity wrthout causing redness. Results
last at least a week too.
Looking for less drastic and pricey options?
Try Garnier Aqua Defense Bright Essence
($19.90, major personal care stores), which
has a light texture and boasts brightening
ingredients like lemon extract and a stabilised
form of vitamin C. Or, go for Za Total Hydration
Amino Mineral Refreshing Gel ($10.90,
Watsons), which speeds up skin's natural
exfoliation process and gives your complexion
a dewy glow.

cord and
flu remedies that dry up
mucus have drying effects
on skin too, says Dr Low.
It constricts blood
flow, Iimiting the amount
of water and nutrition that
reaches cells, warns Dr Low.
Skin tends to become thin and fragile when
it's not adequately hydrated, says Dr Phua. This
makes it vulnerable to environmental assaults,
bacteria and infections, adds Dr Low. lt could
also cause skin to peel and itch. And when that
happens, the vicious itch-scratch cycle begins; this
could lead to inflammation, says Dr Eileen Tan, a
dermatologist at Mount Ellzabeth Medical Centre.
lf skin appears red, blotchy or irritated, look
for soothing moisturisers such as The Sloane lnc.
Calming Balm ($60), which has botanical extracts
that quell irritation. You could also try Nuxe Reve
de Miel Ultra Comfortable Face Cream ($68,
Robinsons), which has calming barley extracts and
strengthening acacia honey. The cream comes in
two versions: day and night. The latter contains
proteins that amp uP cell renewal.
For long-lasting hydration, look for formulas
with vitamlns A and E, says Dr Low. Containing
shea butter concentrate that is rich in these
nutrients, L'Occitane Ultra Rich Face Cream ($70)
fuels dry complexions from am to pm.
Excessive use of hydrogen
peroxide, Retin-A and
benzoyl peroxide can make
skin red and inflamed, says
Dr Low. Reduce the
frequency of usage to every
other day till skin becomes
normal, and always put on
moisturiser when using them.
Patients are usuallY
screened for the condition
if they have extensive skin
dryness without apparent
triggers, says Dr Tan.

.ALMING
moisturising is especially important for you.
According to Dr Chan, this skincare step helps
acne patients regulate sebum production. "lt
also accelerates healing by helping pores purge
impurities, and normalises cell turnover - all of
which contribute to fewer breakouts and faster
fading of old acne marks."
lf you've been avoiding morsturisers because
you hate the greasy sensation, you might like
DHC Moisture Fruit Gel Cream ($23.90, selected
Watsons stores), which is pleasantly light with a
refreshing grapefruit scent. Similarly weightless,
Malin+Goetz Replenishing Face Cream ($127, Spa
Esprit) aids skin repair and reduces inflammation
with calming camomile as well as avocado and
jojoba, ingredients that promote cell renewal. E
