team has become the first
ever European winners
of Isuzu’s annual World
Technical Competition, the
I-1 Grand Prix. Fighting off
challenges from 31 other
countries, the UK team,
with members from two of
our dealerships, beat the
much fancied Australians
into second place, with the
Swiss coming third, and
reigning champions Japan
in fourth.

in Glasgow, and Chris
Richmond from Ferndown
Commercials in Dorset,
were expertly marshalled
by the team’s highly
experienced coach, Tony
Hicks, an ever-present
member since 2010.
Now in its ninth year
the Grand Prix saw 93
competitors carrying out a
number of tricky diagnostic
and repair tests in front of
an audience of over 700
enthusiastic spectators.
The teams also underwent
a grueling 25-question
written exam, covering
both general and Isuzuspecific technical product
knowledge. After all this
was completed the UK team
emerged triumphant.

Interview with Gap Group’s Bobby Allan
Since the company was founded in 1969 as Gordon
Anderson Plant, GAP has offered its customers value
for money, exceptional service and peace of mind. The
company now employs nearly 1200 people in 100 locations
across the UK. As a family run business it places values
such as trust, integrity and honesty at the heart of
everything they do. We spoke to Bobby Allan, Gap Group
Transport Manager, to learn more about Isuzu’s role.
How many Isuzu trucks do you run?
We run a total of 157 Isuzu trucks in our fleet, made up of
63 N75 (7.5t) vehicles and 94 N35 (3.5t) vehicles.
What does GAP Group do?
As a plant and tool hire business we are constantly
delivering and collecting a range of machinery. The Isuzu
truck range fits our business needs very well – the N75
vehicles have great carrying capacity whilst the N35
vehicles are ideally suited for multi-site deliveries of
smaller plant where we can use a trailer.
What are the benefits of the Isuzu dealership network?
There are a number of benefits from our point-of-view, the
main one being speed of repair at a known and consistent
cost throughout the network. With Isuzu we reduce
downtime (VOR time), which helps keep costs down.
How does fitting genuine Isuzu parts benefit GAP?
Using genuine parts ensures warranty conditions are met,
but more importantly it helps GAP achieve consistent
truck performance across our 100 UK depots.
What do you like best about your job?
For me it’s all about people. Relationships formed with
colleagues at GAP, and with our business partners such as
Isuzu, are key. Particularly when all parties work together
with the same goals.
Anything else you would like to add ?
With a fleet of our size (846 vehicles), we’re always going
to encounter problems. On the somewhat rare occasions
when this has happened with an Isuzu vehicle we have
always found them quick to react. More importantly, they
have the ability and expertise to resolve problems to
everyone’s mutual satisfaction. One of the main reasons
we began purchasing Isuzu trucks was to reduce vehicle
downtime, and this has been consistently achieved.

status of Master Technician
qualified mechanics need to
have completed at least 35
days additional specialist
training. To graduate they

service levels throughout.
