Deodorant category
The Family Planning category could very well
be renamed Sexual Wellness. This category is
becoming a new focus for the independent
and chain drug stores as a new area to bolster
front-end sales. And although the majority of
the sales in this category consist of products
that have traditionally defined sexual wellness
(lubricants and contraceptives),
huge gains are being made by smaller
segments such as sexual enhancement
products and devices.
The Deodorant category is a small segment
of the Independent Drug class of trade,
with a market share of 1.08%; but utilizing
this category can increase the consumer’s
market basket in drug stores by 50%. In all
outlets (Food, Drug, and Mass), the Deodorant
Category sales are about $2.6B and penetrate
82% of households.

According to recent surveys, Americans are
beginning to realize that a healthy sex life is part of overall wellness
and they are seeking more sexual satisfaction. Their attitudes toward
sexual wellness products may be evolving as we see more and more
TV and print advertising for such products as Viagra, Cialis, natural
performance pills and assorted condom brands. We have seen such
products as vibrating rings, fingertip massagers and more enter into
the market. Now this isn’t to say that an independent pharmacy needs
to carry some or all of these products, but they do need to analyze what
they carry and how they want their sales to grow in this category. A
new direction needs to be defined.
The lubricant segment of this category has
shown huge gains over the last few years.
Mainly driven by Johnson & Johnson with
their K-Y brand, J&J has introduced such
items as K-Y Kissable Sensations, K-Y Intense,
and K-Y Yours and Mine lubricants. J&J hopes
to increase intimacy among couples and is
conducting a program in Canada on intimacy
to study exactly this topic.
With such a wide assortment of deodorants
out there having the right product mix is key

purchase decisions when they are able to shop
a clear and concise vertical footprint. “Simplify
your Shelf” is a great rule of thumb to keep in mind when creating your
footprint and it will assist in driving growth and enhancing consumer
satisfaction. For those stores with limited front end space deodorants
can be merchandised as part of a “Best of the Best” Plan-o-gram which
includes hair care, oral care, and shaving.
Below are a few more retail solutions to keep in mind when creating
your product mix.
• Expand space on leadership brands to drive category growth
- Secret, Dove, Old Spice, Axe, Gillette and Right Guard make up
55% of the sales in the deodorant category
• Anchor the set with clear male and female brands to the right and left
• Place premium products and innovation at eye level and be first
to market
- Clinical strength, soothing, and mineral deodorants are currently
leading the category in growth and innovation
• Aerosols, secondary and niche brands placed on bottom shelves
• Offer twin pack representation on leading brands for value seekers
And finally, the condom category is one of
the few segments that can benefit from a
recession. Since more people are staying at home in an effort to save
money and spend less, demand for prophylactics can only grow.
With long-term economy issues and the cost of having a large family,
condoms are an inexpensive, reliable form of contraception. This is a
great time to evaluate your current Family Planning category to see
what should be added or deleted to try and capture those additional
sales. Listed below are some key items that should be in your Family

Diabetes Specialized Care Center
As a Cardinal Health customer, there are
several different retail pricing strategies
that are available to you. You may choose
to subscribe to Hamacher or Leader® zone
retail pricing or maybe you are using the
Retail attach to function.
Three hundred twenty-eight Cardinal
Health customers are known by their
pharmacy customers and within the
community as Diabetes Specialized
Care Centers.
The more you know…….
In this issue, I would like to focus on your
customer default retail price profile. Every
customer who receives retail price stickers
is required to have a defined default retail
price strategy. It is particularly important
that your overall retail price strategy is
taken into consideration when identifying the components for
your default profile. Potentially this strategy can be applied every
time a retail price is calculated if the retail price is not found
within any other strategy type (i.e., Hamacher or Leader® zone
retail pricing).
There are three components within this strategy: retail label plan
code, calculation type and label code multiplier. The retail label
plan code is the base number used in the retail price calculation.
The calculation type is the mathematical formula used to arrive
at the retail price. The last component for the default profile is
the label code multiplier; this number is either the multiplier or
the divisor in the equation. There are several options for each
component and they are listed below.

Each month, participants receive diabetes curriculum
downloads, clear and concise speaker notes, a patient handout,
and a sample quarter page flyer that can be used as bag
stuffers. These tools are designed to help pharmacies attract

information on how to build and bill for auxiliary services
and products. Approximately every 45 days, innovative niche
marketing ideas are available, revealing new opportunities to
capture the entire needs of the chronic patient.
By incorporating Creative Pharmacist into the Cardinal Health
Diabetes Specialized Care Center, pharmacists will have all
the necessary skills and tools to educate patients on proper
diabetes care. This valuable addition to the Diabetes Specialized

Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery
will focus on providing pharmacists with
the training, skills and resources necessary
to establish and promote successful adult
immunization services. Detailed information
about routine adult immunizations will
be provided in the self-study modules and

and subcutaneous injections on a partner
